Koh Phanang est amazing! I am so relaxed there is a possibility I may slip into a coma!
We arrived on Koh Phanang on Thursday and headed straight to our hotel in Haad Rin for a swim as its soo fricken hot here. Unfortunately the pool in the hotel was pretty murky so we decided to look for another hotel later that day. Instead i went for a foot massage, which actually involved having a full body massage (?). I have decided however that I'm not keen on thai massages, there are always a few minutes of agony amongst the relaxation, this particular masseuse kept pressing her thumbs into my kidneys which was not relaxing! Coconut oil massages are the way forward.
In the evening we headed down to the beach where the infamous full moon parties are held unfortunately there isnt a full moon while were here but we plan on going to the half moon party in the jungle. The beach is beautiful and full of bars and bucket stands (see below).
On the way home we picked up a 'bucket' which is the classiest and definitely only way to drink! They sell buckets in all the bars and stalls on he side of the road, they are basically plastic buckets full of very strong alcohol and a couple if straws! we got a bucket containing half a litre of rum and a couple of cans of soft drink for £4, bargain!
On Friday we headed to our new hotel which is nothing short of paradise. We've kind of phased out the 'backpacking' element of our travelling and are now basically living it up, it's like a holiday within a holiday. The hotel is on sunset beach (no not like the tv show), we have a bungalow on stilts on a hill right next to the beach. It's none of this bamboo and straw malarkey we've done before, it has aircon, a huge gorgeous shower room and veranda complete with hammock. The hotel has two beachside pools which are always next to empty, they have a spa on the beach where you can get massages looking out over the sea. The restaurant is also on the beach, the breakfast is amazing (they have unlimited musli which is amazing as its about £10 a box out here, seriously). They also have two adorable dogs who have taken a shine to us and rock up on our veranda at night, sit with us on the beach and stare at us waiting for food at breakfast.
We've spent the last 3 days here just laying by the pool, swimming in the sea and reading in the hammock. In the evening on the first night we had dinner on the opposite beach (sunrise beach) and had a few drinks before heading back.
Last night we took a trip to Thong Sala to go and watch Muay Thai (boxing) at the Thai Boxing Stadium. Now, I have to say that 'stadium' was not quite the word for what we actually arrived at, we got to the 'stadium' to be greeted by two Thai girls in plastic chairs sitting in front of a corrugated iron fence with a boxing poster on. We were asked if we wanted ringside or standard seats, giving that the place didn't look that big we settled for standard. We then went to walk through and the same girl who sold us the ticket abruptly stood up and said can I see your ticket before she stamped our hands!
Behind the corrugated iron we were greeted with what seemed to be someone's back garden, overgrown back garden I might add (!) with a boxing ring in the middle and some blue plastic chairs round the edge, this is when we realised ringside would have been a rip off! The 'bar' consisted of two elderly Thai women selling buckets.
I settled on my plastic chair in the long grass (getting bitten by god knows what) and soon the first fight kicked off. It. Was. Weird. The reason for the weirdness was that the two fighters were approximately 7 years old, it felt kind of wrong watching them fight. However, we had seen karate kid on tv the previous day so we decided which one if them was Daniel Son and cheered him to kick the other kids ass. Wrong.
Anyway, after the first fight some grown men came on. Me and Robin took to betting on the fights. On one fight I bet robin that if I won he would have to get a tattoo the following day (seems extreme but he has been debating it since I had my second one done months ago). He never realised that I hadn't actually said he would get anything if I won (!) but fortunately that wasn't remotely an issue as in the 2nd round his guy got knocked out, whoop! I'll come back to the tattoo later.
After 6 fights (and incessant talking from Robin, I don't know how his mates watch footie with him!) we headed back to Haad Rin for a chicken schnitzel burger-obviously.
More laying by the pool ensued, more Tina having sunburn ensued. And that takes us to this evening, tattoo night!
We headed into town to first go and print off pictures of the Cayman Islands (which is where Robin was born and hence wanted this as his tattoo), I got to put my PowerPoint/design skills to use and played around with the picture to get something the artist could copy. We then headed to a couple of places and finally settled on a place where there were a couple of poodles for me to play with whilst I waited (yes, this is the way you should choose a tattoo parlour). I chose the font for the tattoo and where it went of Robins back whilst he just nodded to everything and said it was fine - so I decided to change the picture and get my face tattooed on his back. He hasn't realised yet.
Only joking. Robin sat down for his traditional bamboo tattoo whilst I was pampered, I was given a film to watch, a blanket and had the poodles curled up on my lap. The girl even went to the shop and brought me a drink! After about an hour and a half we were done, and Robin is very pleased, despite them spelling 'Cayman Brac', 'Tina rules'.
Today we went to get me some new books in town and laid by the pool for a bit, it is now pouring down with monsoon style rain so were drinking rum and watching the rain, which is pretty nice!

Frances Having now read the 'why' for Robin's tattoo, no more will be said. Sounds so lovely there. Enjoy it the rest of your time there. Have a light covering of snow and arctic temperatures at present - something for you both to look forward to. Looking forward to seeing you both next week.
