Arrived at our hotel in Phnom Phen in Cambodia about 5pm Monday - we got in moto (like tuk tuk) and had that nervous trip to the hotel when every time the moto slows down on some grubby little back street you keep thinking 'please don't let it be here', combined with the 'is he actually taking us to our hotel or is he going to kidnap us' concerns - however, our room is under £10, it's huge, bug free (yay!), with high ceilings and free wifi and right in centre.
Went for drinks (less than 50p a pint) and got chatting to Cambodian guy who told us to make sure we visit orphanages as the kids love spending time with ppl. I got him to show me where a couple are in Siem Reap which I am looking forward to visiting. He then gave us his email address, although neither of us were sure why?! We also met a persistent tuk tuk driver called Peter Cambodia (although I suspect this wasn't his real name), who was desperate to take us in a trip. He also gave us his contact details!
Tuesday we went to the national museum (pic) and walked around the royal palace and river. The best part of the day was undoubtly robin bring called a lady boy by a kid trying to sell us books in the street!
Today we let Peter take us on a trip to the killing fields and the S21 prison and genocide museum. It was interesting hearing stories from him as he went through it, he was enslaved to work in the fields and beaten and many of his family were killed. The stories and images were horrific, it's scary to think it all happened so recently (Khmer rouge were overthrown in 1979).
We then got a 7 hour bus ride to Siem Reap and they did the usual thing of dropping us in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night.
