Just had a wicked two weeks touring down the East coast in our little campervan…..have got to get us one of these! And only managed to go through a toll bridge once without paying and setting off one speed camera!
Spent our first night in Noosa, a posh surfing beach, where we ended up sleeping in the van in a public carpark because everywhere was full…It was like being in a hot and sweaty tin can. Luckily the beach was a mere 30 seconds away so went swimming in the morning to wash off like proper camping pikeys!
Next stop Surfers Paradise…..very busy, loads of skyscrapers and plenty of bronzed buff lifeguards! Had another sneaky free night on a dead-end side road which was actually overlooking the famous beach….Amazing! Plus there was free beach shower so after another pikey morning wash, we were on the road again….
Decided to take in the full Aussie cultural experience and spent a whole day at Wet ‘n’ Wild….Despite being blatantly the oldest visitors by at least two decades we still had a fab time although at one point it all got a bit serious on the Wacky Aqua Racers with accusations of certain riders setting off before the green light and threats of disqualifications. Left when it was too dark to see and on discovering the Dive-in movie was Garfield II.
Headed to Byron Bay for a couple of days to chill out on the beach and visit Australia’s most Easterly point, before traveling further south to Coff’s Harbour and Port MacQuarie…this time staying on proper campsites with electricity and even shower blocks. What a pleasant novelty!
Attempted a surfing lesson, while Tim sensibly lay on the beach eating pies, and I competed with fellow surfers at least half my age totally showing me up. It was only a two hour lesson but according to local reports I still emerged from the ocean like on old woman clutching my back and muttering. I will however still be referring to myself as a surf chick.
We also visited a koala hospital which was really sweet, all very cute and cuddly and a little bit dumb looking. We even saw a wild one in a tree. So now total animals seen in the wild include: Koalas, huge monitor lizards, bush turkeys, parrots (yes, parrots just casually flying around!), dolphins, and strange prehistoric birds. Sadly we have not seen any live kangaroo just one roadkill….which was rather sad….but we have eaten lots of roo steaks instead! It is now our fav meat, like really tender beef. Yum!
Last day was spent in Hunter Valley Wine country tasting the years best vintage all day……so it was a slow drive back to Sydney in the morning!
