Hi all, Well so far Mongolia has been the highlight of our trip....it is an amazing place and we are gutted we only had a few days here. The people are soooo friendly compared to their Russian neighbours, the scenery is fab and we are loving all the mutton. Spent the first day mouching around the capital and country's only city Ulaan Baatar, before heading two hours into the Mongolian steppe to our Ger camp. It was properly in the middle of nowhere, just green plains and mountains for as far as the eye could see. And it was sooo quiet. On the second day we watched the annual Naadam festival of archery and wrestling in the city alongside such famous people as the rulers of Mongolia and our very own Prince Andrew. But fun as Royal spotting is, the best bit of the day was the horseracing. It was in the middle of the wilderness and was just like a weired summer fete with tents and stalls but also thousands of men on horses just casually hanging out. We watched a race of 553 jockeys, all children about seven years old, race 15 km across the mountains. It was the most surreal sight seeing hundreds of horses galloping towards you from miles away. Some of them were even riding bareback. Hardcore. Afterwards we were inspired to book a two hours trek of our own.....only to discover we were not so hardcore, just very saddle sore. (See what I did there!) Anyway, thats how we monged in Mongolia. Onwards to China and strange food on sticks. xx
