Got the metro to Arlington cemetery this morning, it gives you goose pimples seeing so many white head stones. There are thousands for miles and miles around you! We seen two funerals, taking place and soon after hearses the three gunshots. It put a lump in your throat, it was a solider being laid to rest. The everlasting flame and the Kennedy grave site was really nice, it has all of his speeches on a marble wall over looking memorial drive which has Lincoln memorial at the end of it. Kennedy, his wife, his still born daughter and infant son are laid to rest there in the same grave. His two brothers are on the grass verge around the corner from him. His family are such a trashy family! We've been were he was killed and were he's laid to rest!
We went up to Arlington house; it was first owned by the Custis family, built originally by the Arlington family. George Washington family bought it afterwards, the civil war broke out the house was unoccupied as everyone there had fled. The soldiers used the grounds for sleeping and resting, at the end of the civil war when there became too many casualties it was turned into a cemetery. The tomb of the unknown solider was next in the cemetery, it is guarded 24 hours a day 365 days a year without fail, whatever the weather. They change every half hour, it was really good to see. It's a 21second salute so they take 21 steps and pause for 22 seconds. They walk back and forth like that for 25 minutes and then there's a change over ceremony that we have to stand up for and pay respect. The tomb of the unknown solider pays tribute to all of the unidentified soldiers that died and were buried in the Korean, WW1 and WW2. Sergeants of the army chose one unknown solider from each war and sent their bodies to Washington.
After the cemetery we walked over to Lincoln memorial, the map stated that we were clearly in Virginia when we were at the cemetery and then crossed back into DC once we had crossed the bridge. There's another state we can tick off the list haha!
It was busy, people! WE LIKE SEEING PEOPLE! But they get in the way of your photos all the time! Lincoln memorial was bigger than I remembered, took a photo of Ross by the memorial, he looked just as big as Lincoln haha!
We walked passed the reflection pool, lots of poo which spoilt It! there were a veteran group at the ww2 memorial that was pretty cool, but lots of elderly gentlemen, makes me sad when they were wandering around on their own, some looked really teary eyed! We tried to go up the monument but the tickets were fully booked :/ gunna try tomorrow morning. So we went over to the White House, building work going on the front of the gardens which spoilt our photos!! Was hoping to see Obama pop his head out of the window!! No such luck though. There was gear on the roof for snipers, telescopes and weapon holders.
Had to grab something to eat because we hadn't eaten all day so we found some deli and sat outside amongst all the business people, we fitted right in! :) not!
The Capitol building was next on our list, there were security everywhere! All the police offers and FBI had huge guns! So strict, I was too scared to look at them, they were intimidating! Haha. The building absolutely massive! Longer than Buckingham palace by far!
We went in the visitors centre, we went up to a gallery after going through lots of security and bag checks. We went into the gallery which I thought would be a room with art and paintings in. It was the court room, where Obama usually sits and listens to hearings or says his speeches, were the congress go to vote and make decisions. They had a hearing in there for fallen troops who have had medals of honor and they were asking to have buildings renamed after them because of their bravery when at war. The one building was a post office in New York for a solider who used to be a postman and lost his live saving 5 of his colleagues under fire in Afghanistan in 2007.
The Capitol was really pretty inside and out with all the marble and engravings and paintings on the walls and ceilings.
Another trek over to the air and space museum, our feet are really hurting. By this time! Although it was a good trek because the planes and rockets in the museum were amazing! All originals hanging frond the ceilings, there were also two nuclear bombs in there, I always thought they were tiny but I was definetly wrong! They are incredibly humungous!!
It showed the first aircrafts to fly and the original propellers and Emilia airhearts aeroplane and uniform. There was so much information to take in, this trip my head is bursting with history and knowledge, I can't physically take in anymore information haha! We decided on the metro back up the hotel, our feet couldn't carry us any longer we felt as though we had weights attached to our feet and after a session in the gym last night our legs felt twice as heavy and were already aching! Haha.
Got back to the hotel room, and packed some things, Ross had a nap surprise surprise, only is naps don't last for half hour or so, they last at least 1 and half hours! We were all ready to go out Ross said I could choose where to eat as he was paying for my birthday meal! N'aww what a cutie :) hehe!! We went to a Spanish tapas, it was lovely! We had 6 dishes between us, sliced duck and caramelised onions, smoked salmon with yoghurt spread, baby chorizo, shrimps, olives and roasted peppers. Only over here they name things differently to what we do. Shrimps are prawns, fries are chips, chips are crisps and peppers are CHILLI. Well Ross found this out after he bit into one and gave it a good chew. Haha! I was laughing my head off until he looked as though he was crying, his nose was running aswell he had to run to the bathroom he was in that much pain! I was biting the little ones and not biting into the seeds, although I did venture out a little and tried a little bigger one - big mistake my mouth was on fire so I are some of the bread and just kept my mouth open to catch some air and cool off.
Was a lovely present from Ross! :) we have had a right laugh over this duration of this trip and definitely grown closer as siblings! :)
We found some amazing pumpkins at a farmers market around the corner from us, they were all sorts of shape, sizes and colours!
Can't believe it's all over tomorrow :(
