First full day in the Almalfi Coast and I'm heading to the ferry port to go to Capri for the day!
Not sure what to do there so whilst waiting for the ferry sat where I was yesterday tucking into my breakfast pack of banana and pear juice I found a one day itinerary for the island - perfect!
The ferry was jam packed, I managed to get to the top deck but stood up blowing in the wind. We went past the dolphin island owned by the famous Russian ballet dancer Rudolf something that died of AIDS in the early nineties, apparently its between 50-100k to stay there I think per night? Ridiculous!
Following the guided plan I was getting a small boat to the blue grotto as soon as I got off the ferry, which worked out perfect timing because I only had 5 minutes to spare. Again with the incorrect or should I say missing information relating to this eu green covid pass - can't go in the museum (as this is what the blue grotto apparently is) unless you have one, not mentioning I'd your not EU your vaccination card is fine to use. So many people were reading it like ummm that's crap, now what?
I jumped on the boat, such a great view of the island yet again the mountains and the water was spectacular. Then we passed so many beautiful yachts, there had to be a celebrity amongst one of them but I didn't have my binoculars. I think that's what I would do if I lived on the coast here buy a pair of binoculars a damn good camera and snap all the celebrities from my terrace and then sell all the photos to the tabloids. Muhaha! Even better than my on/off season job in the Greek islands with Ross!
Blue grotto - you had to get in a small boat/canoe to get to the grotto, you weren't in there long but the hole was tiny so you had to duck down and the skipper would pull us in using the chain attached to the rock face, only waiting until the tide/waves would go out so we could fit through. Some of them would have to bend all the way back to get through - not for the faint hearted and I can see why some stayed on the boat and didn't go into the grotto because if you had claustrophobia then this was definitely an off putting thing to see. I mean I do a little I'm sure but I sort of knew it would be fine once being inside.
And my god was it amazing! The reflection of the sunlight bounces off the rocks underneath snd reflects on the water into the grotto, I couldn't believe my eyes it was amazing. The water is around 60M deep so this helps with the shine also. Wowza!! Worth the squeeze to get in here for sure!! Not long after we were all pretty much back on the main boat snd ready to go back to the marina and from there I was going to get a bus up to Capri, take a look around and wow the little cobbled streets slightly like Greece but without the painted white floors and s*** tonne of lemon items everywhere and then all the oh my wow designer shops, some that I've never heard of and some that are from Capri. It's no wonder the rich and the famous come here! I didn't manage to catch a glimpse of anyone famous but I did notice that not only the women that visit here have juice in their lips here but men and straight men… what's that all about?! Trying to not catch flies!
After a drink in the main square and some delicious complimentary olives I headed to noddy bus stop to go up to Anacapri. I picked a good time, earlier the queue was beyond, this time it wasn't so much so didn't take me long to get there and a trip up on the chair lift to the summit of Mount Solaro which promises good views. Well don't get on the chairlift if your scared of heights, have a fear of falling out or suicidal because all they did was pop the leaver down which is easily moved and flimsy. Bloody hell fire, it went high too and steep!
The view didn't disappoint and it was all well rounded the bags of almalfi and sorrento. And the other side of Capri island where the even bigger yachts were - I wonder if they need another friend? There were for sure some famous people down there! If only I had my binoculars….
After the itinerary was complete and I was lemon shopped out I went back down to the marina to grab something to eat and wait for the ferry so not to rush around afterwards trying to get back down there squashed into the noddy bus with everyone.
I asked for a large beer (which may I add usually means a pint) this was not a large in fact it was probably more like a XXL. 2 pints worth in a glass I couldn't pick up! Nor could I drink it very fast. Suited me because I could sit and watch the world go by I just didn't want it to go warm.
The gnocchi was delicious and the XXL beer was good too, but stuffed to my eyeballs and sweaty and tired, I had successfully ticked off Capri and time to get the ferry back to Positano and the noddy bus to the hotel. Another chilled one for me in the hotel tonight, I was not going back out!
