We managed to stay in bed a little bit longer this morning even though there were still a few screaming kids in school!
Breakfast on the rooftop and then we hired a tuk tuk from the guesthouse to the turtle conservation site. 'Just put it on the tab' this bill is going to be huge tomorrow! Haha. Good job everything is cheap!
We tried to haggle from $24 to $20 but they wouldn't have it so we gave in, it was only an extra $1 each and when we realised how far we actually went we felt a little bad. We were in the tuk tuk for about an hour and half!
We got to the site, it wasn't next to the river which we thought it would be so they could use the bank and river as sources for the turtles, instead it was on the opposite side of the road in the grounds of (surprise surprise) a Buddhist temple. That was having a lot of work done to it!
We had to wake the woman up in ticket booth who was fast asleep.
I'm not surprised she was asleep, of bordum. We were the first customers of the day at 1pm and there was only two customers yesterday and the day before - looking promising! Ha.
Once we paid she let us in, it was a pretty tiny building with a couple of little turtle tanks and some bigger sized ones in the corner. There were tiny soft carved flat shell turtles in the pots, they weren't even as big as the palm of my hand. Their shells are so soft when they're little! We held some more baby ones which had some cracking shells and skin patterns! They were retro..
There was a massive yellow necked Asian turtle, and an Asian box turtle.
We thought that was it but we went outside and there were a few in the pens out there, she found a baby one that was dead which was a little sad. But there must have been something wrong with it to die that early.
Picked up another turtle who was pushing it's little claws and feet against my hands to get away from me, it was a weird sensation!
There was a huge tank, that was supposed to have a massive flat shell turtle in it but it was under the water. Scott got in it and tried to walk around the slanted walls, the women walked away obviously not wanting any part of this because these animals are trying to be saved and looked after and Scott is getting in their habitats! I had to walk away aswell.
We were only there for about 45 minutes before we woke the tuk tuk driver up to take us back. It was good but could do with a tidy up and some more turtles in there with bigger habitats.
After the very long and bumpy ride back to the guesthouse we had some food and went for a walk around the town and market, it's so quiet around here, apart from the screaming kids in the schools which were doing fun sporting games, it looked fun! I wanted to join in!
There aren't many people here who speak English, if you go to someone's shop or ask them for something they just shake their head and hand at you, like 'no, you can't buy anything here' haha.
On the street stalls there were small bamboo sticks which are everywhere, we found some tourists eating out of them. They have sticky rice in them, I think they cook the rice in the bamboo to give it more flavour?
Scott found an ice cream truck - obviously. They only had coconut and strawberry though so he had to put up with it. They nearly put that condensed milk on the ice cream, I can't remember the name of it but dad tried it in Thailand and used to have it when he was younger, it's really sweet and a bit custard like in a tin!
Say by the mekong river, the sun was setting. It looked really picturesque with the reflection on the water.
There was the Asian Mr. Motivator setting up his music box and speakers on the side of the street opposite our hotel, last night there were about 30 women doing aerobics there. I wanted to join in but they weren't moving around an awful lot, missing a good aerobics class!
Went on the rooftop for food tonight because the boys wanted to watch the football, safe to say we didn't get any conversation out of Scott all night.
Really tired again, have to get up early tomorrow But no early night because it's FaceTime night! :)
