Sunday 1 June
We had a great Spring Bank Holiday weekend, action packed to say the least. Out and about on Saturday including a trip to X-scape in Castleford, the country's biggest REAL snow slope. It also includes two rock climbing walls, an aerial assault course, indoor skateboard park, Laserzone, bowling, multiplex cinema, 17 bars and restaurants and 10 urban retail outlets all under one roof!
A night out for the Aveyards at Elland Road (the home of Leeds Utd) to see local band the Kaiser Chiefs perform, meant we could catch-up with our old friends Sue and Colin in Tadcaster.
We were pleased to be able to attend Jonty's end of season rugby presentations on Sunday, held at a local farm in Sherburn in Elmet. Also on the agenda was an opportunity to have a go at clay pigeon shooting. Neil was very lucky in managing to hit his very first clay but the luck didn't last very long with him only hitting another couple out of the total of ten.
John suggested we go out for a walk on Spring Bank Holiday morning and we all thought that would be a good idea. Little did we know that this was not to be a stroll in the Dales. We packed a picnic and set off for Horton-in-Ribblesdale and well prepared with walking boots, wet-weather gear and emergency provisions! Our ultimate goal for today was to be Pen-y-ghent, one of the three peaks of Yorkshire, the others being Whernside and Ingleborough. Although it did stay dry, we had to battle with the very strong wind for the majority of the walk up the 2,276 feet to the summit. Even though it was very difficult and there were a couple of times when I thought I would not make, it did feel like a great accomplishment when we eventually made it to the top, just over two hours later. The walk down was a lot more enjoyable and easier, at least on that part Alison and I could actually talk and hear what we were saying to each other! Those hardy walkers - including John and Jonty - who are able to climb all three peaks in twelve hours are able to join the Three Peaks of Yorkshire Club - maybe one day for us!
