Oh Spain how I love thy... This truly has to be one of my favorite places so far. Barcelona is busy and very touristy. Upon arrival I had to go directly to University De Barcelona for a tour and a session on how the University works. The campus is BEAUTIFUL! The building was built some time is the 1600s, if I remember correctly. It was pretty cool to see that people actually use such a beautiful building for classes. I can't imagine what it would be like to go to this University. While on the tour I quickly learned that traveling in such a large group is not really my thing. I found myself time and time again wishing that I could go out and explore on my own. We just seem so American as we walked around after the city.
In the evening I went to a Flamenco show and dinner. It was different then the Flamenco that I experienced in Sevilla. However still fabulous! There is something to be said about the passion and the intensity of Flamenco. The dancers look almost as if they are in pain but you can tell it is the passion for the expression of the dance that drives them. Incredible!!! The night continued to remind me how much I miss Sevilla and I had this lead me to reflect on my first Flamenco experience in Sevilla. I was front row and feeling the pound of the rhythm with their feet and hands, the spanish guitar that lured me in, and the riveting voice that captured my soul. I could literally feel the sweat from the dancers as twirled and stomped, intense. Honestly one of the most beautiful things that I have ever seen in my life. This night was not as intimate but it was just as breath taking. I believe that every person needs to experience this sometime before they die. Put it on your bucket list you won't regret it!
Even later into the night a group of us went out to explore the night life of Barcelona. Again, I found myself traveling in a pack and feeling very American. After a few Sangrias I let this trivial annoyance go :) We heard a group singing "For he is a jolly good fellow" in German so of course we then joined in and finished it in English, LOL! You can say we made instant friends. The rest of our evening was sitting outside drinking and talking with these people from Germany and England. Then about 2am ish they closed the patio and we had to go inside which was some kind of dance party. The rest of the evening was spent dancing until 4am meeting people from all other countries but Spain. We meet and danced with people from Australia, Kenya, Argentina, Greece, and Tanzania it was a fun crazy night. One hell of a way to kick off my days in Spain.
Tomorrow Sevilla to see Anuja<3
This time is going to fly by so fast. I wish I could slow it down, put the breaks on and stop to absorb the culture and life around me. But this is only a small part of my life and I can always come back for more. As Anthony Bourdain says, "I write. I travel I eat, And I'm hungry for more".
