Days 332-338, 10-16 May '15, Eat, Sleep, Explore, Repeat. The Marrakech Mantra! Our month out of time flows ever onward and parole date of 3 June can now be announced - then we're off to Ireland for a repeat engagement. Fab to be popular. We have spent the week exploring - we find a new alley or part of the souks and launch in with nary a care. It's a walled city. What's the worst that can happen. But lostness is a far distant memory. Our mental maps of the medina are shading in new areas everyday. Once we figure out a new section - a way to get to (or avoid) the big square, a new route to lunch or the fruit markets... then the following day we repeat it and really enforce it in our minds. We discovered a superb hole in the wall the other day - all sorts of fresh juices - including the standards, orange and apple and the more exotic - banana, papaya and avocado. For the princely sum of €0.90c, we can buy any one of a number of cakes and also a banana "juice" (really a banana smoothie). That's about A$1.30 for something that would cost about A$9.00 in Sydney. And that my friends is how we can afford to live here for a month. On the subject of affordability, we meet people as we're strolling/eating/exploring and quite often we exchange the names of our hotels - more as a geographical locator than anything. We sometimes pop home and see where their riad falls on the map... and it's nightly rate. So far the average people are spending is €100/night. At which figure we choke! Arghhhh! At €25 a night including breakfast, A/C and wifi and with another €10 a day for all food... so €35/A$50 per day we are literally running on the Moroccan equivalent of an oily (sandy? dusty? good price?) rag. All good fun. Today's explorations took us to the farthest side of the medina so far. We've discovered a bakery. Could warrant a return visit. Not as though we can do much dietary damage on €10/day between us. PS... Today's picture is in front of our local mosque and features a couple of particularly colourful and fetching "Wee Willy Winkies". Obviously there's a technical and correct term for these hooded, unisex robes. But Winkie it is for us. Next week? More roaming, rambling and rabbiting on about it. Could be some news about next housesit soon. Fingers crossed.
