Day 185, 14 December 2014, Packing, Raclette and La Maison du Biscuit (Biscuiterie Artisanale). We had considered going to see the world famous Bayeux tapestries this morning. 70 metres of embroidery detailing the exploits of William the Conqueror (or William the b****** as he's known in the UK). We missed it last time we were in Normandy and references to it have haunted us ever since. As it turned out, we missed it this time too. James has a bug and is exhausted and, even more of an issue, it was packing day (as we're leaving at 6 am tomorrow). Bag wrangling went successfully, albeit slowly, and we've managed to pare back the extra 20 kg bag down to a samsonite tote that currently weighs 5 kg. Bought our luggage allowance online, checked in for our flight then after all that exertion headed downstairs for a regional speciality - Raclette. Basically cooked whole spuds, with assorted melted cheeses and deli meats. Yummo. Wicked, but yummo anyway. This afternoon's outing was scheduled to be to a biscuit shop. We had been thinking an hour and a half in the car to go to a biscuit shop seemed a bit extreme. As it turned out the phenomenal reputation of this joint was well earned. No advertising, no promotion, one of it's claims to fame is just being open every day of the year (except for January). One of the biggest bugbears for people visiting this country is random shutness (Mondays, some weekends, feast days, just because days). This place sells everything from biscuits and cakes to booze and handmade soaps. Tinned fish, duck, sausages etc, etc. Toys. Games. Even has a coffee shop for posh afternoon teas - and it was packed to the rafters with locals shelling out the big bucks for its artisan cookie boxes. Incredible. The exterior which resembles an antique street frontage was designed by people who worked on Disneyland Paris. Magical spot - and absolutely raking it in. The staff couldn't fill the shelves quickly enough. Well worth a 3 hour return drive to the middle of nowhere. Final dinner. Final touches to the packing and lugged the bags downstairs ready for our "O 600 / Oh My God it's Early" departure. Ireland - we're almost on our way.
