Days 495-498, 20-23 Oct '15, Maroni on to North Cyprus and Farewell.
Almost a month in Cyprus flew by and on Friday 23rd we went to Larnaca to collect our returning owner then on to Nicosia where we farewelled both owner and car. It's not often we cross "international" borders on foot, so always interesting. Trundly bags in tow, we passed through the Republic of Cyprus border point and then walked through the UN buffer zone before handing our passports to the unsmiling woman at the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus check point. This area (country?) is internationally recognised by, well, Turkey... We could have taken a cab to our B&B, but that would be just silly with the chance to tow the bags a mere 900 metres as the crow flies. It certainly gave us a chance to see and enjoy the streets of "the other half" of Nicosia. (Remember - Nicosia is the only divided capital left in the world.) We were very happy when we arrived at the lodgings - a sea of calm, tranquility and white paint amongst the gray. And our room was ready at 10 am (brilliant stuff!) Bags dropped, cup of tea enjoyed, maps in hand we tootled off for a few hours sightseeing in mosque-land. Not kidding! Many, many mosques. Many, many ex-churches, now 'mosque'd. We had a great walk about and took loads of photos (see album for all the info). Finally, about 3 pm, with our feet falling off, it was back to the digs. We ended up asleep by about 8 pm - which only sounds early right up until you find out our alarm(s) were set for 3 am... That's right "oh my god it's early" and a flight at "stupid o'clock" tomorrow - 6.30 am. Bring on Travel Day!
