Up for a walk to more closely check out our nearby surroundings. Small rocky beach very close; and found a mini market for a few supplies. Back for breaky (not up to Ornos standards but adequate) then walked back into town along the beach route to explore a little further in daylight. Really lovely fishing village - boats were already in with their octopus and mackerel out drying. Discovered my new favourite - Freddo cappuccino (espresso cappuccino - iced) - yum! Enquired at a couple of bike hire places as decided that was our next adventure. Back at Joseph Studios, they made a booking for us and organised for the motor bike/scooter that Raym wanted to be delivered. A new level to our degree of thrill seeking ...but actually had helmets this time! So Raym had the opportunity to relive a misspent youth and I just held on for dear life! Not really - was so much fun! Even though a step up from the quad bike on Mykonos, roads seem much better and definitely a lot less traffic. Was almost 2pm by the time we started out. Scenery was great! Plenty of shrubs and greenery on the surrounding hills and every twist and turn revealing yet another picturesque beach or cove. First stop wasn't too far - Santa Maria beach. Expected a little secluded beach but the massive car park and abundance of vehicles was a bit of an indication that this was not the case. It was a large expanse of beach lined with trendy bars and restaurants, sun lounges, water sports - and people everywhere! Was unreal! By chance wandered through a camp site and found a cafeteria style restaurant where we had a great souvlaki for EUR2 each.
Continued heading south considering which of the array of beaches to stop at for a while. Decided on Golden Beach which was recommended to us and didn't disappoint. As the name suggests, lovely golden sand and although, as the Greeks say, an "organised" beach with hotel, sun lounges and umbrellas to pay for, and water sports, was easy enough to join many others and just lay on the sand - and enjoy the crystal clear water. Perfect spot for a little siesta. Was after 5.30pm by the time we started to head back on the drive to Naoussa - stopping at the mini market for a few beers enroute. The town was starting to get busy - was a big evening celebration for a religious festival incorporating a reenactment of pirates invading the shores to steal the women of the town. We had been warned could be chaotic so showered and changed and walked back down before the sun had set. Already the atmosphere was building with heaps of people about but we knew, in true European fashion, nothing would happen early. Passed via a Greek wedding and found a great bar (Big Blue) with stools on the waters edge and a glass a wine to watch a pretty impressive sunset. Wasn't long before we were chatting with the couple next to us - Kim and Mick from Hobart. After sunset walked over to the port to join the throng and watch the entertainment, fireworks included. Later the four of us found a restaurant and enjoyed a meal together (with more complimentary wine and dessert)! Was a great night and one of our latest as about 1.30am by the time we walked back!
