Day 11: Victor Harbor
It finally happened, we got a rainy day but we refuse to let that spoil our fun.
The rain started in the early hours of the morning so I made a conscious decision to have a very easy morning and not rush to get anywhere. So that is what we did. Nobody got up until about 8am and even then we casually had breakfast and got dressed.
By about 10.30 (or there abouts) we were in the car ready to go be tourists. The rain had all but stopped by this time but it was clearly evident the day was going to be consumed by scattered showers.
Darren had done his research and decided we would go to Victor Harbor and visit Granite Island.
Granite Island is connected to the mainland by a causeway that offers the added attraction of being able to cross it on a horse drawn tram. The tram started ferrying visitors across the causeway in 1894. We decided to walk across the causeway to Granite Island and catch the tram back.
Once on the Island we set off on a walk of discovery. Ethan and Brandon however decided that they had done enough walking this week and sat down in silent protest. Actually it was more a case of Ethan sitting down in protest and Brandon joining in so as not to allow Ethan to get all the attention. After stopping long enough to get a photo of them, we continued ahead. Funnily, they didn't sit for very long before running to catch up then wouldn't you know it, they actually liked what the Island had to offer.
The granite on the island takes years to erode but it has eroded into quite funny shapes. One rock formation looked like a wave, another like a pelvis. Further along, on the cliff face, a bunch of rocks look like a man sitting looking out over the ocean, I took a photo of it but it really doesn't do it justice. As we continued along the path, there was a write up that said an aboriginal tribe stumbled upon it and named him Ndinjarra Man after their tribe name. I apologise if I have remembered and/or spelled the name incorrectly. With a little imagination you could make a lot of the rock shapes to be any number of things.
After our walk, we had lunch at the cafe on the island. It was surprisingly good. We then caught the horse drawn tram back to the mainland where a little fair was being held so we let the kids (and Darren) have a go on side show alley before viewing the town a little bit more.
We are really enjoying this area of South Australia. The mountains surrounding the lower level seaside townships remind us of the south coast and Victor Harbor reminds us a little of Byron Bay.
The remainder of the afternoon was spent lazing around the van. We have an early start again tomorrow. We're booked on the 9am ferry to Kangaroo Island so we need to leave here by approx. 7.30am to ensure we are there ready to board in time. We are also treating ourselves and have booked accommodation on the island for the night. The kids are looking forward to sleeping in a place that has a toilet inside!
Darren has yet again done his research and planned a jam packed couple of days for us. Can't wait to see Kangaroo Island, everyone says it's beautiful!
