Day 19: Wilpena to Woomera
An early start again this morning. We were aiming to leave by 8.30am but didn't manage to get ready until 9.10am. Hmm, must work on our time management skills!
Today we back tracked a little and went back to Port Augusta. We ran out of time to see the Wadlata centre when we were there a few days ago and we had been told it was definitely worth a visit, so we made the effort to visit today and we were not disappointed. We spent 2 hours in there and could have easily spent the whole day. The centre explains the evolution of the continent and all inhabitants. Very interesting and so much information to read and absorb. There was an interactive section where the kids got to see what radio school is like as well as how to do morse code. We had to drag them out of there as it was getting late and we still had another 2 hours of driving to do.
We stayed at the centre for lunch before wandering across the road to Coles to get supplies.
After shopping, we were on the road again.
The highway was very straight and we figure that this sort of drive is what we are to expect when we get to the Northern Territory.
The only place of interest we passed on the drive was lake Gairdner which looked rare considering all the dry creek and river beds we have seen over the last couple of days. But even this lake looked a little below capacity.
We have stopped for the night in Woomera which is on the outskirts of the old nuclear testing site from the 1940's. We had been recommended that the museum dedicated to the area is worthy of a visit hence the reason for our stop over. We are visiting the museum tomorrow before heading to Coober Pedy.
The park we are staying at is very basic and set up primarily for transit guests. However, they do have a licensed bar on site. It's established in a demountable building and is opened from 5pm daily. The kids were slightly disappointed that there isn't a playground but seems we didn't arrive until 5pm and we're leaving at 9am, I think they will survive.
