Day 61: Kuranda
Our last day in Cairns was spent at the town in the rainforest; Kuranda.
We caught the 8.45am scenic railway up to Kuranda. The train trip took about 2 hours with a short stop at Barron Gorge Falls and running historical commentary on the way. Mum came with us today whilst Bec and Lydia went to see the crocodiles at the zoo.
After we treated ourselves to some indulgent muffins for morning tea we made our way to Bird World. Darren's aunty and uncle, Tom and Kerry, have both sent us messages about how much they enjoyed it so we made it our number one priority. We loved it! The birds land on you, usually when you least expect it. Brandon was very anxious to have a bird land on him, but when it did he jumped at the unexpected feeling of it's claws in his skin. He coped better the next time as he knew what to expect. Unfortunately none of us were lucky enough to have the macaw land on us, and it wasn't through lack of trying.
We left Bird World and had a little look around the market stalls. I treated myself to some new necklaces and Micaela bought some gifts for her friends.
After lunch we continued on to the Butterfly Sanctuary. This again was very interactive with us really enjoying it also. Yet again, we tried in vain to encourage the Ulysses butterfly to land on us. Ethan was able to get it to sit on his fingers for about 2 seconds but it was gone before I had a chance to get a photo. The butterfly's loved my hat, I had about 5 on there at one stage with so many people walking past telling me excitedly.
The day passed too fast, before we knew it, it was time to catch the skyrail back down the hill.
The skyrail has a couple of stops in which you can disembark to have a short walk through the rainforest. We have now experienced Australia's rainforests by walking through the base, zip lining through the trees and travelling high above them. I would consider them fully experienced!
Tonight we all had dinner together in the cafe at the park. It was a little bit of a birthday celebration for mum with us giving her a present that Bec and I bought.
Tomorrow we are leaving Cairns Coconut Holiday Resort and relocating to Mission Beach.
