Hey everyone
Today we travelled to the South Island!
We woke early as the coach was leaving Wellington at 7am to go to the ferry terminal. We would be crossing the Cook Strait, sailing through the Marlborough Sounds and arriving in Picton where we would meet a coach that would take us to Nelson.
Christina was a bit worried as the Cook Strait was famous for its unpredictable weather, causing the cruise to be either very calm or the longest three hours of your life. Our bus driver told us that once the swells had been so big that they were on the boat for 8 hours, as they couldn't get into the harbour.
We had our fingers crossed for a gentle sail. We checked in our bags, boarded the ship, found a seat and got comfortable. We were soon sound asleep. We were in luck, as the journey was a smooth sail and we stood on the deck watching wild dolphins follow the boat as we entered the Marlborough Sound. The scenery was also beautiful, as the islands of the Sound had secluded picturesque coves and beaches with only one our two secluded cottages on the shoreline, complete with private yachts moored up outside.
After disembarking the ferry and collecting our bags, we boarded the Kiwi bus and left Picton, passing many vineyards which were along the steep hillsides, and passed through Havelock, the only place in the world that supplies Harrods with there mussels, a claim to fame that they were very proud off.
After a brief lunch stop we arrived in Nelson. We planned to stop for a little longer here and explore the area. We found our room and weren't best pleased that it smelt like teenage boys' smelly socks. However, we were relieved when the boys in the dorm said that they were leaving in the morning and hopefully taking their smelly feet with them. After getting some supplies and fighting with fifty people in a kitchen the size of a cupboard, we headed for bed tired from the day of travelling. Xxx
