We had a long journey from Koyasan to Nagasaki, which included a flight from Osaka after we ruled out a complex train journey, so by the time we arrived, we were relieved that we had booked 3 nights in Nagasaki to slow down a bit. The arrival on the island of Kyushu seemed to coincide with a lot of rain, so we didn't feel pressure to rush around and try to see everything.
Troy had wanted to come to Nagasaki specifically to learn more about the WWII events, and we spent a good few hours at the Atomic Bomb Museum trying to grasp the incredibly tragic history of the city. It was an excellent museum that also spoke about the peace efforts the city has put forth since, and its connection to the wider global movement. Although it was difficult to visit, we don't think you could come to the city and miss it.
We managed to take the cable car to the top of Mount Inasa on the one night that it was only drizzling, to take in what is apparently known as one of the "top 3 night scenes in the world". It was quite spectacular with the shadowy landscape mixed with the lights and a bright cruise ship moving eerily out to sea in the darkness.
And we love that Japan is regularly showing the MLB playoffs on tv in the lounges of our hotels! We managed to catch some of a baseball game at the park in Tokyo, and it made us a bit homesick :)
