This morning we finished our 3 day tour with an early 5am wake up. The hostel was so cold we hadn't had much sleep at all and were feeling a bit sorry for ourselves! The pancakes and dulce de leche for breakfast certainly brightened up the morning slightly though!
We headed off to our first stop which was the geysers, these were cool and there was steam just bursting out of the ground! They smelt quite a bit of bad egg but the bit of warmth gained from standing close was worth the smell.
Next stop the hot springs, here there were natural pools heated at around 30 degrees. Quite a few people got in but we just defrosted our feet from the edge - I was not about to get into a bikini when it was that cold outside! It was bizarre that we were in the middle of nowhere and these hot pools existed but pretty cool.
Our last stop this morning was Lago Verde, or green lagoon. This lagoon has so much salt in it that if you get in you will float - just like in the Dead Sea. I wasn't about to test it out as the water was only around 2 degrees but an Aussie guy we had met a few days before had given it a go and showed us a video of him jumping in, looking extremely cold, that was enough proof for me!
Next we headed for the Chilean border where our guide was to leave us and take the rest of our group back to Uyuni - an 8 hour ride as opposed to our 1 and a bit to a town across the border! We jumped into a minibus and were driven to the Chilean immigration. Here we had a bit of a run in with customs as Browny was trying to smuggle some dried chillies into the country! Apparently even dried things are not allowed across and these were quickly confiscated - luckily without a fine!
We soon arrived in San Pedro a very Mediterranean feeling town with lots of white washed walls. As we were driving through we were pleased to see many stores selling the souvenirs we had wanted to get in Bolivia but had managed to miss. We stopped at a cafe with free wifi for a cup of tea and to sort out somewhere to stay and then headed for a hostel.
The hostel was nice and the staff very helpful in answering our hundreds of questions about various tours and places to eat. We decided to book sand-boarding for tomorrow. After a much needed shower we walked back into the centre and began our shopping trip! After a couple of hours of buying various souvenirs, including the jumpers we had seen in Cusco, we were all shopped out and headed for dinner. We went to a restaurant recommended by the hostel and were not disappointed with the food - it was just a shame I wasn't feeling too great but Browny really enjoyed her meal which was very similar to shepherd pie!
We walked back to the hostel and despite saying earlier we would stay up and have a chat with some people, we were both too exhausted from the long day and went straight to bed!
