Tasha's Travels
Hi Everyone
We're leaving to catch our flight in about 30mins, so going to try and get started on our trip to Uyuni!
We got a very bumpy night bus from La Paz and arrived at about 5am in Uyuni which is a total hick town, every street seems to just end abruptly with a building site into the desert, so we managed to wander round most of it (which was absolutely thrilling) in no time at all. We weren't being picked up til about 11 to start the trip, so we went to have some breakfast with Franck and Alex who were in our little tour group and then basically sat on a bench until our 4x4 turned up with our non english toothless tour guide/cook. Thankfully we had another guy in our group Sander who said he had spenmt 2months learning spanish so he'd translate, although it turned out we weren't completely in the dark anyway!
First stop was the train cemetary, which is basically a dumping ground for trains which carried the salt to argentina and various other places, Claire and i weren't too convinced that this was a tourist attraction, more a symbol of the local council being a bit slack and clearing away the crap!! But the scenery was already pretty amazing, we'd literally driven about 5mins from Uyuni and were in the middle of nowhere with this random train track in the middle of desert.
After a bit more driving we found ourselves driving across pure white plains as far as teh horizon so that cars looked like they were hovering over the surface, it was bizarre. We stopped at a point where they were combing the salt into these huge cones and then carting off to various places. Everywhere was bright white as far as you could see, we saw some water pools where the salt was fizzing at water reached the surface, and then got to a little town where they had furniture and various crafts built out of salt and finally a salt hotel!
We then arrived at fish island ( shaped like a fish) where there are thousands of cactus plants all over it, the highest i think was about 12 or 15m high, its was the most perculiar place, just stuck out in the middle of this salt desert place covered in coral rock, it was like something from a sci fi film! After clambering over the island we went back to the sit at a stone table where are driver had knocked up Llama steak and salad, which was actually really yummy, so we sat and soaked up the sunshine.
After lunch we continued to drive to head to our accomodation, and yet again the landscape changed from teh salt to desert to mountains and lagoons, i honestly have never seen such different scenery in such a short distance! We got to our accomodation which was in another tiny hick town around 6ish and it was already freezing cold, we all had our beds in a little out house and sat in another room to eat whilst the local children entertained us with Bolivian music (2 boys playing a fiddle and a girl on guitar playing what sounded like the same song about 8 times) but it was very entertaining!
