My days in Bergen…
So I arrived at 7.30am in Bergen and caught the bus to Michelle's house. An Ollerup student from my year. Oh before that, the view of this city from the plane was amazing! It's so beautiful with all its mountains and fjords, would love to go on a cruise on the fjords.
Anyways the first day Michelle took me downtown (oh it was good sunny weather) and showed me around. We walked through the fish market (huge lobsters, prawns, fish… everything!) it looked so good. And then to where the old wooden houses stood, known as Bryggen. A lot of them were souvenir shops but the area was very nice and the houses had a lot of character and style to it.
We then were on our way to trek it up one of the mountains in Bergen. Ok I have climbed a mountain before in Sydney (Blue Mountains) but that's nothing compared to the Norwegian mountains! Some people (crazy people) have run up this mountain in under 15 minutes! I think it took us an hour. Michelle had to keep saying to me "we're nearly there Tam". The steps were so steep and you climb pretty high up. I had to keep having breaks and there were a lot of people running up and out of breath, yes it was hard work. Finally when we did make it to the top the view was amazing! And thank god too, I'll never do that walk again! But the other funny thing is that it got so windy when we are right at the top. And I mean REALLY REALLY windy. Like we were getting blown around and couldn't stand still in one spot, it was unbelievable. But it was fun and when the wind died down a bit, I managed to squeeze in a handstand photo. Oh and I couldn't find the English name for this mountain and I had it written downwhere the name in Norwegian, but can't find it.
We then walked to another mountain (no climbing) through the forest, it was a very nice walk in the nature. We got to Mount Floyen for another view and then took the cable car down down down to the ground. That was my exercise for the day. Phew…. We then went in search for an asian supermarket to buy dinner and in doing so it started raining. Good timing, imagine trying to climb a mountain in the rain, no thank you!
So that night I cooked for Michelle and her brother some Vietnamese Spring Rolls (rice paper rolls… the only thing I can cook) and it turned out well except we missed one vital ingredient… couldn't find any mint leaves! Oh wells it still tasted good and they're going to cook it for their parents when they get home (they're currently on vacation)… yes it was a winner!
The next day we were supposed to go to the shopping mall and then downtown to eat sushi but plans changed. I was still sick from the summer camp in Rissa and I felt especially worse that day. Michelle was also sick and wasn't feeling 100% either. So we headed to the mall for like half an hour and I tried to eat some stuff but couldn't really so we ended going back home and to bed. What a waste of day, I slept the whole day and then we watched Mamma Mia.
So the last day I was feeling much better so we went downtown to Michelle's work and had a coffee and relaxed while watching the city below and people walking past. It, of course, started raining a fair bit but we still just walked around the town and the fish market again with an umbrella to share. We then went to eat sushi for dinner which was sooooooooooo good and I also spoilt myself and had crème brulee for dessert. Was so tasty and I was so packed. We ended up going home after that and just relaxed on our computers in the dry and warm home. So all in all it was just an easy chill-out day.
But I have to say Bergen is a very beautiful city and I think I'll definitely be back again sometime in the future. The only downside is the rain but you get used to it.
So now my adventure begins in Oslo, well it already has… but I'll tell you all about it in my next blog. =)
