Tamara's Travels
Hello People!
Well, last time I wrote I had just trecked a gorgeous route accross some volcanoes in Taopo. The next day I thought it would be fun to keep up with the hiking and so made a very steep mountain behind Taopo my target for a solitary climb. It was beautiful, amazing views and a really good walk, until the way down when i went over on my ankle as it was super steep. I heard a loud crack, which turned out to be the tearing of 2 ligaments and I also pulled a tendon! Nice work! Anyhow, someone was definitely looking down on me because I had not seen anyone at all for 3 hours and then suddenly a lovely couple appeared and helped me out!
Determined not to let it get in the way of my adventures.... we are now in the south island and I have just climbed a glacier!
We took a helicopter over Franz Joseph glacier, and then hiked in big spikes all over the ice, sliding through ice caves and climbing down crevasses. It was such fun and the most spectacular views and noises of ice cracking.
We also did a few walks to the terminal point of both Frans Joseph and Fox glacier. And a walk to a surreal lake (possibly called Matheson Lake but I cant remember!), which literally mirrored the mountains.
In Wanaka now, a really sweet ski town with fantastic moutain views. Off to Queenstown next to whitewater raft....
Also, since Taopo we have spent time in Welington - went to a cool museum on the history of NZ there, and then got the ferry to Picton, which was an adorable little village, and then through Nelson up to Abel Tasman National Park, over to Hamner Springs, then Kaikura, where the weather was too bad to go out in the boat whale watching :(, down to Christchurch, accross Arthurs Pass to Hokitika... Busy little bee aren't I!?!
Love to all from an injured but very happy Tamara xx
