Today we hired a scooter complete with petrol, no insurance and no helmets for Rp70,000 (which is about £4.60)! Garth had a tactics ride to make sure he remembered everything from his days in SA and then I jumped on the back. At first I was scared and holding on very tightly. Even though we probably weren't going over 30mph (the speedo didn't work....neither did the petrol gauge) it felt very fast as in if we fell off I wouldn't have any knees or elbows left! However, after a while we both became very confident and I took a lot of photos whilst on the ride!
We explored the whole island, well, as far as the roads went that didn't have too many holes in! We drove through villages and schools, past fishermen and seaweed farmers, past beaches and mangrove forests. What a great way to see the island, stopping anywhere we wanted for photos and the wind whilst driving keeping us cool on what would be almost unbearable heat! It was a good place to drive as the roads were quiet and they drive on the left. We stopped in the main village for a milkshake by the beach where we landed and we even found the yellow suspension bridge going from Lembongan to Ceningan Island. We didn't cross it though.
Back at Bay Shore Huts, Garth taught me to drive the scooter which was extremely fun! I even drove with Garth on the back for 500m! :)
Afterwards, we were so hit and sweaty (and my bum was fairly bruised from all the bumps in the road) we took a cool dip in the pool before lunch.
The rest of the afternoon was lazy. But I wanted to take a walk down the main beach in the village. It was past 4pm and cooling off (or so I thought) and we drove round, parked and started our walk. However, with the sun out and no wind at all it was soon sweltering. We stopped for a cocktail and milkshake, but Garth was about to pass out from the heat so we quickly returned to our hotel pool to cool off!
We enjoyed another chilled out evening. We considered using the scooter to go to another restaurant but we didn't have any cash left and there were no ATMs on the island.
