Today we decided to try to entertain the children by going to Ocean Park. Hong Kong’s own theme park with animals, rollercoasters and more cable car rides (like we needed those). Our impression of the Hong Kong people as orderly polite and welcoming went out the window somewhat on this trip as Tiger was nearly crushed in a stampede in the pouring rain and as the rush to get on mediocre rides became just too much. Angus (who did not have a good day) expressed frustration at how “these people just stop anywhere and take photos of anything” and how they “seemed not to care about anyone else around them”. This combined with the heat, torrential rain and his failure to take on sufficient water made Angus fairly intolerant and indeed intolerable for the rest of the day.
To get to Ocean Park required another ride on the MTR and then a special yellow bus that we were herded onto like sheep to the slaughter. On arrival we were greeted with a dancing fountain and some giant pandas and cute red pandas but it went downhill from there with 45 minute waits for really rather dull rides. Even a new fridge magnet for the Pugh collection did not cheer us up. The food on offer was suspect and unhealthy so we got by on chips, popcorn and coke apart from Oliver who once again ordered something covered in an odd sauce and looking quite slithery and vile.
We have discovered that we are staying in one of the most densely populated places in the world. I think we guessed that. Returning to our hostel after a truly painful bus ride home we entered into a very confusing discussion with our landlady Kitty who thought we were leaving tomorrow. Sadly she had booked our very tiny room out to another family for our last night. Much to our confusion and concern we have now been “upgraded” to a “double” room which means we can top and tail in two 1.5 sized beds for the last night. We do at least get a window this time. Joy.
We have honestly tried to find some local cuisine but as every translation includes the words intenstines, stomach lining or giblets we have stuck to a chain called the Spaghetti house or to our undying shame Macdonalds for the kids. We did manage some pork buns in Ocean Park but have failed to find their equivalent in the neon dazzling array of shops and cafes here in Mong Kok.
We have this evening finally laid our hands on a dusty bottle of red wine found on the back shelves in a corner of a 7-11. Oliver is now vaguely happy for the first time this holiday. However by the time the air-con has done its magic no doubt he will have a hangover x 3 for his sins.
Here’s to another day!

[email protected] Its the rain, everything will brighten with some sunshine! I thought Guiness was the drink of choice for Oliver. One of the major reasons I did not do VSO was that I could not face eating in China. macdonalds is fine. xxx
Barbara I should not have laughed at your blog, but it was truely funny. It really begins to seem like the holiday of a lifetime!!! Oliver miserable, Angus grumpy, Tiger crushed and Jo trying to cope. Hey what's new? Things can only get better as they say. xxx
