After a good nights sleep, I got up and walked all around central Melbourne. Really nice city... the hustle and bustle of a good city but a little less crazy than Sydney!! After seeing the sights and riding the trams I then headed down to meet my old housemate and colleague Rob at Virgin Active Melbourne. He showed me around and I saw exactly how rubbish VA in the UK was compared to where he worked now!!
That night we met at the MCG for my first AFL (Australian Football League) game, St Kilda Saints vs Richmond Tigers. The MCG was an amazing sight- full it would hold over 100,000 people (there were aroung 40,000 for the game). The game was a relative thriller, with a last minute "behind" meaning a draw (relatively uncommon in aussie rules!). I had decided to follow St Kilda as they wore the same socks as my old UCLAN rugby team- so was naturally disappointed with the draw... but a good night nonetheless!
Next day, unsure what to do, I arranged my bus to the airport for the following morning (at 4am!!!). Having noticed a lot of buzz around the Docklands Stadium I realised there was a footie game that afternoon, Collingwood (the Man Utd of Aussie Rules) vs North Melbourne (descibed to me by Scuddsy as an equivalent to Fulham!). As it was starting to rain I decided to go watch that rather than trawl further around the grey, overcast Melbourne suburbs! So, wearing the North Melbourne top Scuddsy had given me, I went to watch the 'Roos get absolutely spanked by the 'Pies- the equivalent of Ut beating Fulham like 5or6-0!!! Enjoyed myself agin thoguh>
That evening I went to bed at 9pm to try and get some sleep before my early start the next day. Despite the clocks going back, it was a drag getting out of bed at 3am, but I made it down to the station and eventually to the airport. Australia.... DONE!!!
