After a short drive from Melaka (2 1/2 hrs) We arrived in KL. So far the local transport we have been using has been very good, comfortable and airconditioned!! However the local facilities have been an interesting experience - squat toilets!! Once settled in our hotel which thankfully has normal toilets!! it was time to do some exploring of the city. First stop Merdeka square. From here we headed towards the Museum but unfortunately it had moved and not in walking distance! We all then went our seperate ways. I wondered around the streets for a while taking in the atmosphere and amazed by all the shops, food stolls and cars!! Later on i meet back up with the group and we all went out for dinner to a very nice chineese resturant. After this it was time to brave the night market and do some haggling!! The next day we were booked on a morning tour of the city. First stop National Monument - a place to remember all those killed in the world wars and also the emergency period. From here we headed to the Federal Mosque. We had to make sure we had clothing on that covered our knees and shoulders which i did however we still were given gowns and head scarfs to wear - check out the photo's for a good laugh!! We also had to remove our shoes. It was an amazing place and the detail in structure of the building was stunning. After becoming very hot and sticky under those gowns we finally got to take them off and from here we headed to Batu Caves. This is basically a big cave which has been turned into a Hindu Temple which you have to climb 243 steps to the entrance!! Could you imagine having to do climb that 5 times a day!! There were lots of monkeys running around which provided good entertainment as we walked up the steps. Once back down on ground level we headed to the Royal Salanger, which is a tin factory. We got to see how the factory operates and individuals jobs, such as making a tumbler. We also got given a drink from cups made from tin and as soon as a cold drink was poured in the whole cup went ice cold - amazing!! On the way back to the we stopped at the Petronas Towers (Twin Towers) for a photo stop. Once back at the hotel we had a free afternoon to do whatever so me and Rosina (my room mate) headed out for lunch, it was delicious and the staff were so friendly and i made a friend for life with the manager as i insisted on eating the whole meal with chopsticks even the rice which she was so impressed with!! We then headed of to the Museum a short taxis ride away. This was very interesting and told us all about how Malaysia gained independence and how the country is doing now - the aim is by 2010 it will be a fully developed Country. Once back at the hotel we meet the group and we all headed of to the KL Menaka (sky tower) to gain good views over KL by night. It was very pretty with all the lights twinkling and the twin towers looked good - unfortunately i was unable to take any good pictures through the glass!! We then headed for the Night Markets again for some more haggling which is great fun!! After a few days in the city which was an amazing experience i was looking forward to heading off to our next stop Kaura Kangser where we were then going across to a Island for a homestay visit.
