We decided that the only way to get an idea of what was in Lisbon was to take a hop on hop off bus (a yellow one this time). A good choice I think. We had a glimpse of most of the city and stayed on the bus for a few hours. It was a bit chilly outside so a good way to explore. The city runs along the Tagus River and the old port area is where the great explorers left to conquer the world. There are a couple of bridges across the river. One resembles San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge and has cars on its top deck with the train line (that we arrived on) on the lower deck. The more recent Bridge is 17 kms long - it needed to cross wetlands on either side of the river.
The World Expo was held in Lisbon in 1998 so there are many relatively new buildings. The Vasco de Gama tower tower was one of them and is very impressive. Huge statues are scattered throughout the city. (We particularly liked the St Anthony one - apparently he's the saint if 'finding things' so we reckon we could do with his help at times!!!)
We stopped at the museum of natural history - David went in, I wandered around some antique market stalls in a nearby park. In the old part of the city we found some great food markets - cured meats, cheese, bread, mulled wine, nuts. They do food so well here.
Went back to last night's restaurant for more fish for dinner.
