Left Catania at 8.40am for our journey north to Pompeii.
We had another ferry ride (with our train) from Messina in Sicily across to the mainland.
The glimpses we caught of the Amalfi coast as we sped past we're beautiful. The sun was sparkling on the the ocean. It's easy to imagine this area to be teeming with tourists in season. The coast is wall to wall holiday accommodation of varying standards - quite deserted now. The beaches are black sand.
The change of trains at Salerno was seamless and we arrived at our B&B at about 5.30pm. We had a bit of confusion when we reached Pompeii station though because there are two!! Un be known to us we were at the wrong one and couldn't make any sense of the walking instructions we were trying to follow. A cab was the only solution - right choice, we'd never have found it.
After settling in our hostess took us back in to town so we could eat. Italian drivers are fearless. The roads are very narrow. They fly along and pass with only an inch or two to spare. They don't wear seat belts and park anywhere they can find a space. We just hung on for the ride!!! After our meal the guy from the restaurant drove us home in his brand new Fiat 500. What great service is that? (Mind you, we think the B&B folk and the restaurant folk might be related!!!)
