G'day guys and gals, another weekly update... Even though the days seem to murge into one another. Its crazy how much I keep doing, no day is the same couldn't honestly tell you what I did last week already!
So I stayed at Hervey Bay for one night and one night was plenty, no jokes it was like gods waiting room.. Just full of old people! Then moved onto Agnes water for one night again, broke it down into smaller parts as the distance to Airlie beach was huge! I will never think a 2 hour car journey at home will feel long again, it'll feel like 5 mins. Even for Agnes I had to get an over night bus, for 12 hours! But like the tool I am, I booked 2 separate buses. so at 12 in the morning for 3 hours I had to sit in a service station like a billy no mates trucker. we arrived in Airlie at 9am but couldn't check in till 1pm. So I headed to the park to chill, before I knew it I'd fallen asleep with my backpack and life besides me.. I swear backpacking is a tiny taster into what life as a tramp would be like! I just woke like holy s***, I'd never do this at home. Especially as people walking round you with there day to day life even had a free exercise class going on next to me, maybe should of done that instead aye.
Airlie is a beautiful small town though, it has this massive blue lagoon for everyone to swim in as you can't go in the sea due to 'stingers' which over looks the harbour, I happily sat there watching the ocean eating crisps and dip- old habits die hard!
Finally got to check in and I ended up in a room with a girl I met on the oz experience bus in Sydney.. It's So crazy in such a large place you constantly bump into the same people! We ended up going out but much to my dismay I had to get my boat to the whitsundays at 8am the next morning!
But oh Maa god was it worth it! We had a little red sailing boat for 20 people, called siska which used to be a racing sail boat. Prince Charles has even been part of the crew! And clearly I'm on the same par as him right?! Although it would of been better if it was Harry!
We set off from the harbour and reached the coral reef destination for snorkelling. With our stinger suits on to protect us which looked ever so attractive, yet didn't cover our hands or feet which I knew knowing my luck was where I was gunna get stung. But we headed off onto a small little boat to hit the reef, it was completely different to snorkelling in Fiji! The fish here were so big and friendly they just came swimming up to you, all brightly coloured like rainbows. There was one in particular called elvis who was huge, literally half the size of me! Usually a fish that big would of freaked me out big time and I'd of had to get out the water but he was so cute, if you can actually imagine a fish to be cute that is! You could also hear all the fish biting off the coral it was the strangest sound. The next snorkel destination was just off a little sand island, this was Deffo not as successful as the other! This girl called ester and I went out but the water was so shallow we kept getting stuck and you couldn't get over the coral.. Instead I just kept falling on it which really hurt and the more this happened the more stuck I got, which just made us laugh so much.. But laughing just made us sink, to which obviously made us get scratched more ha was such a catch 22. Apparently you could just hear us from the beach squealing and squawking away.. Way to ruin a nice serene paradise! All we gained from It too was ripped suits, scratches and no fish. On the way back to the boat however we saw a massive sea turtle swim to the surface, I just imagined him to be all finding nemo like 'heyyyy dude'
Once we were back on the main boat we put the front sail up bad cruised through the sea to catch the sun set it was beautiful. Sat there with our legs dangling over the boat, wind in our hair watching the sun with a glass of goon (pretending of course it was champagne). It was then I realised if you'd of told me a year ago that this time next year, you'd be on a yacht in Australia I'd of been like ahh no bloody way! It's pretty darn Schweeet I have to say. After a few times of doing the whole titanic scene at the front of the boat (had to be done) ,dinner, goon and watching the stars lying on the boat we all bonded over cleaning our teeth together spitting over the side of the boat into the beautiful waters, seemed so wrong. I then retired to my little Cabin bed, which was actually just a wooden box.. I did wake up half way through the night just from how much I was sweating as it was so damn hot (attractive) and then saw wood all around me like oh my god, is this a coffin have I died?! Woke up in the morning to the sound of a kettle boiling and toast being cooked which is always delightful, had my cup of tea up on deck..the sun shining, the ocean air, passing the most beautiful scenery -it looked more like Canada with all it's mountain like islands.- Honestly it wasn't the nicest tasting cups of tea but it was one best.. I wish all tea consumed would always consist of such beautiful factors.
We headed to Whitehaven beach which is said to be the best Eco beach in the world, to get there we had to trek through a small forest area. Our tour guide stopped at a green ants nest and said if we wanted some vitamin c we could lick the ants.. I agreed eagerly, and picked one up before she said all you have to do is lick it's bum! I thought it was a sick joke, but no. I licked it all the same and ewh it was so so sour like lime and it burnt and fizzed on the end of my tongue.. The moral of that story is don't lick anything of any kind in the bum region!!
Whitehaven itself was incredible the most beautiful beach I've seen in Australia the sand was so white and soft it felt like flour. The sea to was so sparkling blue every where was picture perfect! So glad I get to experience all these amazing things, it's not till you look back at photos and you think wow!!
After lunch we sunbathed on deck (the best way to sunbathe ever I reckon) had the music blasting and finally enough wind to put all the sails on our little boat up! I helped pull the sails up, kudos to anyone who does it. It was so hard, Deffo earnt a few sick swan muscles after that! Unfortunately my dream and lifestyle of a millionaire had to come to an end and we had to hit try land back to Airlie that afternoon! We all met that evening for the boat after party and dinner which was nice, met some lovely people. I was actually a minority for once too as most people on the boat were french and German. I was with 4 German girls and they spoke English to one another the whole time just for me bless em.. I felt like such a plonker, but it was nice to not mix with us Brits for once! Even though I get told by so many people out here how stereotypically British I am.. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not?!
The next day was Anzac Day, which is a Memorial Day for the Australian and New Zealand people for the war. For the Aussies this is an excuse to get drunk, we on the other hand celebrated by chilling at the lagoon. I bought myself 3 dolla crackers, a 2 dolla book and a 50 cent bracelet and that's all I spent all day! Ha so successful- oh the life of a backpacker! Unfortunately had to say bye to the girls as they're heading down south and me north, that's the only bad thing about travelling you meet so many nice people and then you always have to leave.. But still onwards and upwards quite literally because I'm heading up and chasing the sunshine to Townsville ,as I've got a few days on magnetic island. Can't wait!
