We were both flustered about giving the bell boy a tip, firstly because we weren't used to having our bags carried for us and secondly because we didn't really know the money yet! We handed over a Dollar and he seemed happy! It's a lovely posh hotel we are staying in - huge double bed, TV, constant hot water, clean and fresh towels and bedding and most importantly not hot!
After chilling for a while we headed for the snack bar where I finally got my long craved for bacon sandwich - it was worth the wait as it was delicious! After eating up we came back to the room to simply enjoy the luxury before 6 weeks of camping. I am both excited and nervous about meeting the group and starting out tour tomorrow. After 5 months of independent travel just me and my husband we are joining a group! I can't believe we are in Africa! Anyway to more important things - I am off for a long hot showerJ.
An amazing night's sleep was had by both of us - we even woke up later than planned having not heard the alarm at all, but thankfully still not too late! After another hot shower and a little breakfast (my tummy is still playing up badly!) we checked out and met our group who all seem lovely.
After some form filling in we met our truck, Zambezi and her driver Piet as we loaded all our bags on and then we set off. We are a group of 22 men and women, Neil and I are far from the oldest married couple of the group and the mixed ages and nationalities seem to make a nice atmosphere.
We bumped along the roads of Kenya chatting to the people around us as we made our way to the border. Along the way we saw many African people traditionally dressed which was a beautiful sight. At the border we filled in some forms and got out our yellow fever certificates - Neil and I had stupidly left them in our big bags tucked away under the truck having not needed them before here - doh! As we headed to the border control office we were harassed a lot by local women trying to sell us all sorts even placing things on my arm as I walked 'as a gift'. We said 'no thank you' and were pretty much left alone after that. We got our passports stamped quickly and easily, and back on the truck headed out of Kenya.
The Kenyan landscape was much like the Indian desert, vast and arid. We crossed no man's land and drove into Tanzania. After filling in a form, paying 50 Dollars (except Sean who being American had to pay 100 Dollars!) and waiting for a short while we were all rewarded with a visa each in our passports.
Back on the bumpy road we sped along, eating our packed lunch on the way and were soon in Arusha. The landscape became more mountainous and although we couldn't see the whole thing we spotted the base of Mount Kilimanjaro! In Arusha we stopped at a supermarket to get supplies for our Serengeti and Ngorongoro crater game tour starting tomorrow. We successfully got some cash too before another short drive to the camp site.
Hope you all enjoying reading about our new adventure starting in Africa :) Lots of love xxxx
