On the bus there was a lady opposite us who had two small boys with her - they were so well behaved for such a long journey and for them being so young. They were sneaking odd smiles at me which was sweet!
The journey soon passed and we arrived at Kuala Terengganu. For the first time in Malaysia we were slightly harassed by taxi drivers as we got off the bus. We politely declined but not really knowing where we were going, headed into McDonalds for a cool drink and a re-group.
After working out which way we wanted to walk we wandered off to look for a room. I left Neil with the bags a few times while I checked out hotels. They were either full, disgusting or too expensive! I was starting to panic but thankfully we stumbled upon somewhere a little out of our usual price range but manageable - plus it had luxuries such as air-con and Wi-Fi so we took it.
We got rid of our bags and went back out for a wander around. We eventually found the Lonely Planet recommended hostel which has cheaper (no air-con, no Wi-Fi, no bathroom) rooms but to save a lot of money we reserved a cheap room for tomorrow night!
While we were walking around I was leered at, shouted at by men on motorcycles and blown kisses at - not a problem for me as I am with Neil but I wouldn't like to be here alone. We were also stopped by an older Malaysian man who told us he had a friend in England and we had a general chat. He shook both our hands before we moved on. He was a genuine nice man.
Neil was hungry so we stopped at a little café and he had some Nasi Goreng (friend rice). We then headed back to our nice cool room to enjoy the luxuries before moving to the less glam place tomorrow.
We had another fairly long sleep in in our air-con room - it must be the heat that wakes us up! We were really annoyed that the shower didn't work, so dressed, packed and headed to our new hostel.
It was a fairly long walk so we stopped for some breakfast along the way. By the time we got to the hostel the cheapest room had gone, but we took the next one up, still a lot cheaper than where we had been last night and the shower worked. There was however no customer service at all. We had to wander around and were ignored a lot. We were eventually given a room so we went downstairs to ask about boat tours. Here we were completely fobbed off, either no one spoke any English or they didn't want to. Even though there were boat tours all over the walls apparently they didn't offer them!?
Neil and I were thoroughly deflated by this time, but decided to carry on with the boat tour search so headed into China town. It would seem that even being only an hour away from Palau Kapas, that no one runs day tours there. We were given some information on a 2 day tour to Palau Rendang but soon decided it was out of our price range costing over a week's budget.
We wandered around Kuala Terengganu for a while taking in the market, the river front and princess hill before buying our bus ticket to Kuala Lumpur for tomorrow. We mused a lot about if this was the right thing to do or not but we both feel that the East coast of peninsular Malaysia has been frustrating and unwelcoming so hope that we can find some sanctuary in the capital city. There is a lot to do there, including 'home' things such as the cinema.
I think being in this environment has pulled us down more than we think. We noticed we have eaten a lot of western food in Malaysia, more than anywhere else we have been on our trip - comfort food to try and cheer us up.
We spent a few hours in McDonalds using the free Wi-Fi to look at what to do in Kuala Lumpur before coming back to the hostel to chill out. After a couple of hours we went for dinner at pizza hut - another western meal but we are hoping we are both happier in our next destination of the capital so we will eat more Malaysian food.
We did a wash at the hostel today but the machine wasn't great at all - at least the clothes smell a bit fresher I guess!
We got talking to a German girl who is staying at our hostel and it is reassuring to know that she feels the same way about Malaysia - there is just something missing. We also talked about my fear of insects and creepies - she understands as she used to be the same but you just have to learn to live along side them! I really am trying my best but vow to try harder so they can't ruin my fun any longer!
The following morning the usual check out routine was easily done and we walked to the bus station. We were really early for the bus so treated ourselves to a McDonald's breakfast each! Yum! After a short wait we were soon on the coach on our way to the capital city!
Lots of love and sloppy kisses!!! xxx
