I've attempted on many occasions to order frog in numerous French restaurants in the UK. Even a trip to Paris hasn't brought me success.
However, last night I was able to order Frog in a local Cambodian restaurant. It really isn't as disgusting as it sounds. Although fairly salty, it did contain a fair amount of meat.
So last night I once again went to see my Cambodian friends perform at the Phnom Penh Seafood Restaurant (good show guys!!). We went for after work drinks and that's where I was able to try frog for the first time.
Today I went to the Russian Market with Mosa. I parted with $3 for a Gap t-shirt (made in Cambodia) and drank sugar cane juice!
This afternoon I took a tuc tuc to the killing fields. This is where the prisoners were taken from s21 (where I went yesterday) to be executed.
It is unknown the exact number of people that were killed, but it is estimated to be approximately 20,000. Many corpses were buried without heads. Mass graves were unearthed in 1980 (yes very recent!!) and forensics discovered that many of their sculls had been beaten.
Apparently they beat people to death to save bullets. The most horrific thing I found out was that children and babies were held by their legs and soldiers would bash their heads agains a tree. This tree still exists and I was horrified to find a tooth next to it. In fact bits of bone was scattered throughout as I walked through the fields.
Sorry to paint such horrific images, however it really makes you feel lucky when you witness what these poor people went through.
The place certainly wasn't for the feint hearted and I'm really pleased I didn't decide to blow up that cow in Siem Reap now :-s
On a brighter note, my Vietnamese visa is now ready and I'll be leaving at 11:30am tomorrow for Hoi Chi Minh City.
Having mastered the Yuan, Baht & Reils, I've now got to get used to another currency; the Vietnamese Dong. £1 = 33,489.89 dong. Try getting your heads around that!!
