Today we are taking the train from Helsingborg down to Malmo and across the bridge that divides Sweden and Denmark and into Copenhagen (the Capitol)
Well it is so easy to get there and so worth the trip. Copenhagen is very busy but very laid back. When you step out of the station you are standing right opposite the Tivoli Gardens and all of the crowds waiting to get in especially if you arrive close to opening time as we did.
Our first port of call was Stroget the world's longest pedestrian street, Scandinavia's first totally pedestrian street (opened in 1962) there are many stores selling budget items alongside top designer label stores and cafes. Lots of busking goes on and the crowds are huge, though it is strangely quiet and relaxing for such a busy place.
Our next port of call (pardon the pun) was Nyharvn the oldest part of Copenhagen many fishing boats are tied up along the canal and lots of the large open canal tour boats pick up and drop off there. The houses along either side of the canal are painted in the traditional bright colours typical of the older parts of the city. The ground floors of these houses are home to the many excellent bars and cafes that spill out onto the canal side. We bought take away beers and sat on the side of the wharf to soak up the sun. We then headed off to Amalienborg Palace home to the Danish Royal Family since 1794. From there it was a short stroll down to the Harbour side to look across to the Opera House opened in 2005 at a cost of over five hundred million dollars US, all paid for by a prominent Dane (a very wealthy one at that)
We then tool another stroll back to the train station stopping off half way to rest our weary feet and sample traditional Danish food at a delightful restaurant called Peder Oxe a favorite of Anna and Henrik. Henrik and I also indulged in a Carlsberg or three along with Schnapps (well it is traditional!).
To get back to Helsinborg we caught the train to Helsingor and caught the ferry from there which allowed us some very rushed duty free booze shopping before the bell sounded half way across to announce we were in Sweden.
We returned home just in time to pack a picnic before heading up to the open air concert in the park next to Karnen (the tower) it was a delightful end to a fantastic day.
