Claire & Steve's Excellent Adventure
Steve and I caught the very efficient, speedy, cheap and immaculately clean underground train (London take note!) to Mong Kok to visit the markets there. As it was densely populated the markets were packed particularly the Ladies Market - you can probably imagine hundreds of women crammed into a tiny space haggling over knickers and petticoats! The pet fish market was amazing - you could get pretty much any type of fish, crab, turtle you wanted for a few pence and there were literally thousands of them. We also popped into the bird market which wasn't too pleasant - loads of beautiful birds in tiny cages which we just wanted to set free. The big signs warning us off bird flu encouraged us to make a swift exit!
In the evening we headed for Happy Valley for a night at the races. It was quite weird to find a huge race course amidst the skyscrapers but it was a hugely popular event with the locals and expats alike studying the racing papers. We dabbled a little in each race, convinced each time that we were backing the winners and shouting and waving at the jockeys as they paraded past. I think the beer must have affected our judgement because not one of us won a dollar! It was a great night though and a little bit addictive which was quite worrying!
