Claire & Steve's Excellent Adventure
Dan and Emma took us to Ocean Park - a large theme park and wildlife centre - for a day of fun! We saw the giant pandas, loads of butterflies and birds and an amazing aquarium filled with so many fish, turtles and sharks. We had a blast on all the rides - the views from the rollercoasters over the bay and cliffs seemed to make the rides even more dramatic.
Later on that day we went to Rat Alley for food. You are bombarded with people shoving menus under your face trying to get you to eat at their street restaurant. There were all sorts of food available but we settled on a really good Thai meal and joined the throngs of people eating at long tables....a bit like the school canteen but with beer and better food!
Whilst Emma worked the following day, Dan took over the role of tour guide. We caught the ferry and then a bus with a crazy driver to the island of Lantau to see the Big Buddha and the Po Lin Monastery. The Buddha definitely lived up to its name and was worth the climb even though Dan told us that it wasn't actually an ancient monument but was built around 20 years ago!
We watched the monks performing martial arts and beating each other with sticks which looked rather painful but impressive! The monastery was a mass of colourful statues and people praying or offering incense.
We later visited Tai O, a fishing village built on rickety wooden stilts. Some of the houses were tiny and obviously built for noone over 5ft tall! The markets were bustling with traders selling the usual unidentifiable goods and the smell at times was overpowering. We made a hasty retreat to the tranquility of a nearby beach before heading back.
