We managed to get across the 7 flooded creeks and it appears that the farm is 30km, at least half an hour drive outside of Gatton and completely isolated, it's in the middle of nowhere, there's no mobile signal and no internet unless we use their dial up. We are absolutely out of reach from anyone wanting to get hold of us, might not be such a bad thing.
It was well expressed on their profile that the farm was a work in progress and we could see that there would be plenty of projects for us to get stuck into. The whole point in doing this is to experience things that we wouldn't normally have the chance to and learn to adapt to new an unusual situations, no better time than the present!
We were shown to where we would be sleeping which was a cabin with a 6m x 4m room with 3 bunk beds, it was very farm like and something we would need to adjust to as we're not used to sharing a room with spiders! The kittens in the games room were ok though.
We were then shown the house that is about 20m away from the The Cabin this is where we would eat our meals and spend time with the family. We weren't expected to work that day just settle in, it was nice to have the time to explore the farm and meet some of the animals. There's a German couple here Dominik and Kyra it's their 3rd time here, 1st time was 1 month, 2nd time 4 days and now they are here 1 month - it was encouraging for our first help ex to see that they had visited Serendipity so often and for so long.
We did feel a little overwhelmed being townies but we did want to give it our best try. Feeling out of place and not knowing what to do with ourselves and with the Germans grafting away we asked them what jobs there were to do, Kyra showed us the weeding.
Now these aren't your average weeds that you pull out of your garden, these b*****s break your back and some came up to my shoulders We had to separate the caster oil plants as these are poisonous for the pigs and could kill them if they were to eat them, so we went about pulling these out first and making a separate pile. We then began pulling the other weeds out thinking that it was quite a project making this area look like a garden, well it's something we can get stuck into anyway.
Our first night eating with the family was good, it was nice to have Dominik and Kyra around as they showed us where everything was, Eddie cooked dinner and we all watched some TV. We had a shower then went to bed at 8.30pm quite tired.
I slept that night with my head inside the blanket for fear of spiders crawling all over me and potentially in my mouth. We were both cold that night but neither wanted to move to get the blanket that was on one of the bunks, cos we were scared of this countries deadly critters in the pitch black!!
I didn't sleep amazingly but wasn't majorly tired, we got up at 8am had breakfast and started the weeding again. We were told today that they had a whipper snipper, unfortunatley it didn't have any fuel so we carried on by hand, and got pretty good at it too!
