We drove from Fox to Wanaka the same day once again surrounded by mountains and rushing water that eventually lead to Lake Wanaka. This lake is huge, massive, can't describe it and don't know the length will have to find out, but anyway our first sight of it was impressive the colour of the water was almost emerald blue, it's a shame that the pictures don't quite do it justice. All the water in New Zealand is the most amazing colour which can vary from a blueish grey in the streams and rivers through to a deep blue with patches of turquoise in the sea so inviting but oh so bloody cold!!
We got into Wanaka quite late about 4pm tried to find accommodation but there was a triathalon going on so most places were fully booked. We found a campsite and they were charging $30 per pitch which we refused to pay for one night and is really way too much to be paying especially Al only had a one man tent that only stood about 2ft off the floor, it was more like a tomb then a tent.
We still needed to shower up and cook dinner so to show our distaste for wanting to charge $60 for the 3 of us we parked the car up near the kitchen and showers did what we needed to and left. I must admit that this was the first time that I's done anything like this and was worried we'd get caught but you only live once and we weren't the only ones, there were backpackers in a wicked camper (Wicked campers are horrible spray painted death traps that are rented out to backpackers)that was parked by the laundry room and they blatantly weren't staying there either just doing their washing!
All fed and watered we went back a little way to a basic camp ground which only consisted of a toilet and stayed there the night, you are supposed to pay $7pp but we thought we'd try and get away with it as were due to leave early the next morning but unfortunately we weren't lucky enough as we were packing up and about to leave at 7am the ranger came around and busted us, we weren't told off just paid our money and he moved on but we weren't the only ones he did seem to wake up most of the other people who had stayed there the night, see they all do it!
Today was the day of Puzzle World!!! Been looking forward to this, taking us back to our childhoods!! Puzzle world consists of illusions, holograms, puzzles (obviously) and a maze. We got there at 8am when it opened and we had the whole place to ourselves which was great as there was no one to stand in your way when you were looking at a hologram or in the hall of following faces which was a big room with 6 walls of faces all 4 high if you hold one hand over your eye and walk slowly around the room the faces all follow you whether you're looking up, down, left or right you are being watched. We then went into the "False Prospective Room" this would be a complete nightmare for anyone suffering with a hangover which thankfully we were not today. The reason being that the floor is at an angle but everything in it is placed so that it looks at a normal angle, this plays havoc with your sense of balance and it can make you feel quite sick so the trick here is to look at your toes. There's pictures of me and Steve standing on some steps and it looks like we're leaning at an impossible angle and should be falling over but in actually fact we're standing at 90 degrees and it's the room that's squiff! It does make you feel quite unbalanced after a while so we left and had moved onto the next room which is once again about illusions and some of these techniques were used in Lord of the Rings to give the impression of size difference between Gandalf and the hobbits. Take a look at the pictures you'll see what I mean!
Next was the maze, I haven't been in a maze since I was in single digits. We all started off as just the 3 of us trying to get to all four corners then find our way back out again, an hour and half later the lads had managed it (because they stuck together and I went off on my own) and there was loads more people all turning the air blue with frustration myself included. All around the maze is emergency exits and there was quite a few that had been used and left open, the temptation to use one and was immense but I knew that Steve and Al would never let me live it down so I persevered and finally got out vowing never to go in another maze again.
