This was the place that we had been looking forward to the most. Queenstown is the adventure sports capital of the world if there's something death defying or impossibly stupid to do then you can find it here.
We found ourselves another hostel /garden tent set up again with brilliant views over Queenstown and the lake, we would have a few drinks admiring the view a few times during our stay. As well as being for adrenaline freaks Queenstown is also known for its nightlife, which naturally we had to try out on our first night, the evening ended in the small hours of the morning with luminous paint all over us and cursing the fact we were staying at the top of a hill, well that's what you get for good views!!
Al had been saying all the time that he wanted to do another bungee jump and I had been quietly considering it too doing the original one from the Kawarau bridge it's only 40m and I thought it would be good over the water. Conversation over a glass of goon or two turned to an if you do it I'll do it challenge but not really in my favour, I agreed that if All books the nevis bungee (which is 134m / 440ft and the tallest bungee in New Zealand and 4th highest in the world!!) then I'd do it too, bear in mind that I had never done a bungee and Al had so knew what to expect, Steve didn't help by saying that if I'm going to do it then it should be the biggest available and he'd only pay for that!! So after a goon handshake with Al the deal was done and there really was no turning back, once paid for there is no refunds, at all!
I would love to tell you that I was a nervous wreck in the run up but I can't, me being so calm though really freaked Al out and it actually made him worse. I can't explain it I should have been writing a will and panicking but I was chilled out reading my magazine and taking it in my stride maybe that was subconscious to take my mind off if it. Once we got the bungee site they gave us our harness to put on weighed us for a 2nd time, which I actually hated the thought of more than the jump itself! There was only 3 of us jumping but Steve and the other chaps partner also came to watch. We were all huddled into a cable car that takes you over to the main jump car once in here they get you in the order needed to jump. I had wanted to go first so that it was over and done with but it's not done like that you go in order of weight heaviest first so amazingly I was last (we all musthave been fat bast*rds!) the thought did of going last didn't impress me much as I'd have to watch the others.
Al went first and I did think he was going to bottle it, he was shaking like a leaf and shouted at the guy when he was counting him down to just let him go, well on three he jumped off and a few mimutes later he was back up again with a huge smile on his face, ok good he liked it and wanted to go again, good news!! Then it was the turn of the next chap, after you jump and on your second bounce you have to reach up tp your left leg and pull a cord upwards which releases your legs and turns you into a sitting position for the winch back up, this poor chap couldn't release his legs and was winched the whole way back upside down, his head was bright red and the vein down the middle of hid forehead looked ready to explode, hhmmmm I hope I manage to pullmy cord….
Ok my turn and they sat me in the jump seat and bound my legs together and attached the bungee cord, spun the seat round and I had to waddle to the edge. They tell you to look straight ahead and let your eyes make love to the mountain which is easier said then done when your about a toenails distance from the edge and it's only natural instinct to look down, which I did and yes it is scary but I don't remember having doubts in my head (surely that's not normal!?!?) I asked the guy who counts down to just go from three which he did and on one I lept out and that's when I thought what have I done and had a split second of nerves but by then it's way too late. It feel like you would expect in a cartoon when Willey Koyote runs off the cliff hangs in mid air then plummets, well that's what I thought it felt like, split second then your plummeting, initially you are petrified then amazingly you lose that feeling and enjoy it as the air rushes past your ears, the mountain blurs in your peripheral vision and the river below rushed us to meet you. Just as you think you're not going to stop the cord tightens and your quite gracefully it feels flung back up in the air and begin to bounce around. On the video it looks like I'm bouncing really high but it didn't feel like that at all, probably to do with the adrenaline coursing through my veins. Now was the time to grab the cord, I gave it a big tug and luckily my legs dropped down and I was sitting and could admire the view, on the way up I was actually more scared then when I jumped, madness!!!
With the jump over Al and I were on high as kites and loved every minute, Steve not liking heights not so much! A lot of people say that they just wanted to go out and get hammered after their bungee but I felt so relaxed and chilled out I would have been happy reading a book! I can't actually remember if we did go out that night but we definitely did get the greatest burger in the world from FERG BURGER.
If you ever go to Queenstown you have to have a Ferg Burger, little lamby was my favourite, don't question it just do it. Every time we went past there were queues out onto the pavement, the place must be making a killing.
We spent 4 days here, in Queenstown not Ferg Burger, and on the last day Steve and I went on the shot over jet it's only 25 minutes but it's such a great ride speeding through the canyons with the walls coming so close you could touch them and spinning in 360 turns brilliant.
Queenstown was even better than I thought it would be and wouldn't hesitate to go back there. Love, love, loved it!
