Dunedin is the university city of the South island, it had quite a good feel to it even though it was the school holidays still. We stayed here two nights had a good wander around putting up ad's for our car as went. Our flights were already booked to go back to Australia on the 4th February so we only had a short amount of time to sell the car and if someone in Dunedin wanted it then we'd be more than happy to sell it here and bus our way back to Christchurch.
It was quite a pain that we were in Dunedin for the weekend as the brewery tours were already full and the Cadbury's tour didn't run on a Sunday. We didn't know about any of this and only found out when we go there so missed out which was a shame. We did have a few Speights in the ale house and went out that night, we all had quite a good night and Al ended up in the pub downstairs for a lock in with all the old boys down there so he was feeling worse for wear the next morning.
Upon leaving Dunedin we had to go to the worlds steepest street in the Guinness book of records, Baldwin Street. Here's a few facts if it interests you, the grade is 1 in 2.86, every year there is a race to the top where everyone from families to top athletes join in and it's called the Gutbuster. There are others but it makes no sense to me so wouldn't imagine that you'd know what I was going on about, I think I have put the picture on here so you can take a look that would make more sense.
We'd been told to get a fair bit of speed up (yes we drove up) as a lot of the time people have been known to get quarter of the way and then start rolling backwards. I don't know why people would ever want to live on this street because your handbrake would be knackered and so would you if you had to walk up and down it. It did feel as though the car was going to topple over at the steepest point and I was worried that the car would give up but ye of little faith the car made it to the top, we took our pictures which I'm a little disappointed at as I don't think it really gives the impression of how steep this street is!!
Dunedin done, last stop Omaru.
