We found ourselves on yet another train from Korinthos to Athens. We spoke to a few back packers at the station found out what hostel they were staying at so thought we'd give it a try. This was our first tast of hostellife, shared showers and toliets communal area and kitchen, our first opportunity to chat with other travellers, yay!!
The hostel manager was bit weird to say the least and had the dodgiest looking wig we've ever seen, took him half hour to find out how many people were staying, but did manage to fit us in, the cleaner also gave Roger her life story apparently he sounds like Jason from Take That, doesn't like Robbie Williams and there's voices in her head!!
We met an American and Bulgarian traveller and also another American, Nick, who was a journalist on his way back to the US from Moscow to pick up another working Visa. He seemed to be glad of the company and we were glad to have travellers to finally speak to. Nick gave us a great tour of Athens showing us all the major sites and back streets as weel as alot of history. During the tour we found out the hostel was in the red light district and were really shocked to see people blatanlty using heroin in the street, nice place!! We stopped and admired their way of life for a few seconds then swiflty move on to the hostel and hookers!!!!!!!
Next day we saw the changing of the guards (quite a resemblence to Monty Pythons ministry of funny walks) and the Acropolis to see the fantastic views of the surrounding city and beyond. On our return to the hostel we found there was no room at the inn for a 2nd night so in true British spirit we downed a couple of beer chasers, threw furniture out the window and pissed in the corner!! (Only joking) We siad thanks and went to the airport 20hrs early to wait for our flight to Cairo. At the airport sense set in so we thought we'd try and get a room at the hotel opposite, but at 200 quid each a night the rock hard cold floor was more appealing! According to Roger who managed 5hrs sleep a wash bag wrapped up with trousers was more the adequate as a pillow. (TIP:Don't sleep at a check in you be asked to move) anyhow we all made it through the 20hrs but still didn't manage to be first in the check in queue.
Overall thoughts in Athens was that like every major capital city there's good points and bad points, between the 3 of us we haven't got a majority vote whether we'd like to go back or not, but Greece we definitely do want to go back to.
Cairo here we come!!!!
