WHAREAMA
Isn’t it a wonderful feeling when you accomplish something you were unsure of.
Well… just like Steve conquered his Mt Everest so too did we traverse right over the Rimutakas with our apartment in tow. Our Isuzu did it effortlessly and Steve being the exceptional driver he is, did it with ease.
We popped in to Freshchoice in Greytown on the way, and then on to a very well set up dump station which we knew had the addition of fresh water for our tanks and then to the Wild Oats Cafe. The beauty of Carterton, Greytown and Masterton is , it is flat, we had wide streets and ample parking.
As we approached Masterton we simply pulled into the Gull where diesel was significantly reduced due to Anzac weekend and then carried onto Whareama.
We are definitely out in ‘da stix’ and parked to the side of the local Rugby club, with nothing but farm paddock’s and the obligatory cow-pats on all sides. No just nature and a gathering of lovely caravanners and motor homers.
This rally is a Christian gathering and after a meet and greet half of our names were put in a hat and we put our hand in and drew out a name of would you believe it another Upper Hutt couple Joy and John. The idea of this was so we could join them for dinner in either there’s or our caravan. Which we did and had a thoroughly lovely time. After dinner was praise and worship in the hall. WELL out came all the scripture and song 🎵 tunes we had sung decades ago, eg This is the day, this is the day that the Lord has made and other such wonderful old tunes.
After our ‘choral’ we had a guest speaker from the neighbouring farm who is nearing completion of a man-made lake on his property.
With a sizeable dam and some 700m long (not sure of the width) and 12m at its deepest point. He shared some of the many bureaucratic and contradictory hoops he had to jump through, throughout the whole process.
The main purpose is irrigation during the very hot Wairarapa summers. The process has also included the creation of sizeable ‘wetlands’ and walking tracks which will be open to the public. Water skiing on the lake will also be possible.
