Ho Chi Minh City - Saigon
(4 nights)
We arrived in Saigon in the rain, nice. The roads were mad. Scooters and horns. You had to close your eyes to cross, it really was chaotic. We found an ok hotel, clean and friendly. Dumped our bags again and headed onto the streets. "you want books?" "You want motorbike", no, no and no again.
The roads were mad but the bars seemed a little quiet. Oh well, we soon livened them up!
The next day we started a 7 hour walking tour of the city. We saw some great galleries, main theme - WAR! We went to the museums, the best being the WAR Remnants museum. This was a very graphic, bias look on the Vietnam/US war. You left really hating the Americans. Vietnam has always been at war with someone or other.
One thing that stuck out about Saigon was the immaculately kept flower beds and streets. Vietnamese ladies dressed in their traditional white dresses cycling the streets added to the authenticity. We met with Charmaine (Lorna's friend from London) and her boyfriend Robert. Charmaine has been living in the crazy city of Saigon for 18 months, working in a school. They treated us to a lovely meal in a French restaurant - STEAK!!! Then took us back to their lovely flat for drinks. It was great to be in someone's home instead of another bar... Thanks guys.
The next day was more WAR. We went on a tour of the Cu Chi tunnels. These tunnels were built by the locals to protect themselves from the US troops. They were amazing. The US hit with their almighty force but couldn't understand why they weren't winning the war. US soldiers were being shot by snipers that were nowhere to be found. It was as if the Vietnamese were literally disappearing underground!!! The tunnels were tiny, built especially so the locals could pass through the many levels making it hard for the bigger framed westerners. We went through a tunnel, god it was small!!! This place was the 'Platoon' of Vietnam, there were MASSIVE bomb craters and tanks that had been blown up by land mines. Scary stuff. Cambodia & Vietnam have been some of the biggest battle fields over the years!
After the tunnels of Cu Chi we were in need of some cheering up so we met with Daphne and Simon (a cool couple from the Netherlands) for drinks, followed by a farewell dinner with Charmaine and Robert.
Tomorrow we head Dalat - the central highlands of Vietnam.
