MEKONG DELTA
(1 night)
We booked ourselves on a 2 day delta trip, this was the perfect way for us to enter Vietnam..
The boat itself was impressive - that it worked! It had it's very own cockpit it seemed. Very weird.
Our very first water border crossing, an easy crossing and change of boat to a more authentic long boat , we were now in Vietnam!! Yahoo
Cruising up the delta was beautiful, surrounded by lush green rice paddies, smiley waving locals that were washing in the water, kids playing, men riding water buffalo's.... passing under monkey bridges (these are hikilty pikilty built things made of long rods of bamboo, haphazardly tied together 10m above the river.)
Once we reached the port of Chau Doc, we were driven by rickshaw to Sam Mountain were we spent our night at a very run down .. very run down guest house. Our room was so lovely it even had pets... living under the floor boards and walls and what was left of the ceiling. We escaped the guesthouse and climbed to the top of the mountain to watch the beautiful sunset over the Mekong Delta and rice paddies.
The next day we went back onto the delta and visited a fishing village - afloat on the water as well as a little Cham tribe village who make cloth/towel and weave silks. We were surrounded by many cute smiley kids selling us there homemade cakes.. still warm! Delicious!
The rest of our tour was a bit of a mix up and we never got to see the incense factory or bonsai gardens... we were pushed onto a bus with all the locals and sent to Saigon. A slow journey as we stopped every few minutes and harassed with all sorts of weird and wonderful foods from vendors hopping on and off of the bus. This was our first introduction to Vietnamese bus drivers. They do love their Horns!!!!! Every bloody 2 seconds.. just to let everyone know they are coming...
We eventually made it to a wet Ho Chi Minh City -Saigon 6 hours later.
