Coffin Bay turned out to be a bit of a reunion. Ian and Leanne who had started the trip with us some 4 months ago decided to fly in from Melbourne and spend a few days catching up with us all. We also caught up with Gerald and Sonya who have been on a similar schedule to us since Home Valley Station about 10 weeks ago. A great catchup.
Us boys had decided to go fishing for the day on a charter boat. Coffin Bay is renowned for oysters, whiting and snapper so we should be assured to catch a feed. The day started well, with plenty of reasonable size whiting landed and chilling in the esky. Then suddenly I hooked into something big, the rod bent over and was close to snapping as the rod was only a whiting rod and very light. Line was stripping off at a fast rate and the fight was on. Over the next 5 or 10 minutes I kept as much pressure as I dared to try and exhaust whatever was on the line. It then went for another run and when I checked my reel I was down to about 5 metres of line left on the reel. Our skipper quickly started the motor and we idled along to enable me to get some line back. Another 5 minutes of pressure and short runs and he was ready to come up. Slowly I worked him towards the surface and there he was, a shark about 4.5 feet long. We got him in the net and on the deck. The catch of the day. We are going to be eating fish for some time. Our skipper was an ex butcher, so he went to work and did a superb job of preparing our catch for the dinner table.
Warren and Ian had decided that they wanted more encounters with sharks, so the next day they drove to Port Lincoln to do a Great White Shark dive in a cage. They motored out to sea for about 3 hours in search of the Great White, but today wasn't their day as no sharks were to be found.
