Burketown 27/8/15
We have a strange feeling today as we cross to Queensland and almost with a little sadness( only moments) that our trip is into the last quarter, but still lots to check out and experience. 320 Km of gravel and bull dust roads and several deep water crossings, The Fletcher, Robinson Rivers kept us alert en route to Hell's Gate Roadhouse taking four and a half hours driving. Hell's Gate has a history of being the last outpost to guarantee safety before crossing into the NT pre pioneering days. NT was a wild frontier, particularly Borroloola, harbouring cattle duffers, murderers, petty theft and sly grog. Anyway, this seemed a convenient halfway stop as during the trip we decided to travel onto Burketown, just another couple hundred Km or so !! It was rather refreshing on approach to Burketown - the township was green, plenty of water here, surrounded by three rivers. We have been holding out here in the hope of eventually booking into Lawn Hill NP ( it is so popular). In the interim, we discovered from the park managers that a free camp close to Adel's Grove would be a good choice for several nights. We watched the first NRL match between Broncos and Souths since June at the fairly new Burketown Pub and a good team result with the Broncos winning!! Photo - spanking new Shire Building
