I arrived in to El Calafate on St. Patrick's Day a slightly broken man from the W trek! Tara was flying down from Buenos Aires to meet me so I just spent most of the day chilling in the hostel. When Tara arrived we went out for the most amazing dinner - I love Argentina the food is so good and although we had plans for a big night out we were both knackered and just headed back to the hostel for a beer as we also had an early start the following morning!
The next day we visited the Perito Moreno Glacier which is about 80km outside of El Calafate. It is an absolutely stunning site. It is one of only 3 glaciers in Patagonia which is advancing! It's face in Lake Argentino is 5 km wide and over 60M in height - it really is a sight to behold! The colours are magnificent - I say colours - it's one colour blue but in many different shades and it really is fantastic! First of all we walked around walkways designed to show you a few different angles of the glacier and, it was really stunning but difficult to get a sense of the size of the glacier. We were also treated to a few avalanches which were absolutely amazing to see and hear; the noise was deafening!
After the walk around we went on a boat trip up to get a bit more up close and personal with the glacier - again this was immense and certainly gave a better understanding of the magnitude of the glacier. It really is an amazing sight and difficult to explain - I hope the pictures do it some justice!
We spent our final night in El Calafate in the hostel in darkness (the power went), we had candles and a MASSIVE barbeque, to be honest it was quite nice - atmospheric! The following day we jumped on our comfortable but long (the journey time was long, the bus was normal length) 27 hour bus to Bariloche!
