Packed up and left our apartment in Krakow and headed for the Salt Mine at Wieliczka about 15 km away. Did the guided tour which was compulsory as you can't wander by yourself for obvious reasons. It started with walking down to 65m (52 flights of stairs). That was level one and we finished at level three which was 135m deep. The actual mine is 7km by 5km so we only saw a fraction of it. All the chambers have carvings in them all made of salt, an amazing sight really. Underground there is a function centre and a shop and cafe. Luckily at the end of the tour there was a lift to take us the 130m up to the surface. After leaving the mine we headed for Slovakia and a small town called Levoca as Stephen had spied a castle there in Lonely Planet. Our hotel was about 10m from the main (and only) town square and there happened to be some cultural festival on so they had a big stage set up with a band. There were lots of craft stalls set up with people selling all sorts of local wares and most of them in traditional dress, hence the photo (especially taken for Stephen's mum). The best part was they had beer tents as well selling half litres for the princely sum of one euro ($1.18). Had to taste Slovakian beer so we helped them sell a few more. Had dinner back at the hotel as didn't seem to be much on offer at the stalls in the square apart from fairy floss and some funny looking dumplings.
