Most people go to Hervey Bay as the start off point for a 4wd trip to Fraser Island, we were no different. Our trip did not go until Saturday so we had a few days to watch the cricket before we set off - I wish I hadn't bothered !!! Anyway back to the important stuff the cricket ....... er no Fraser Island. It is the largest sand Island in the world measuring 125km by 15km and the only way to get around in by 4x4. Jo didn't trust my driving so we were on a 15 seater bus for 2 days and 1 night. We were camping in a luxury tent (it had a wooden floor and electricity). Most of the island is navigated on little logging tracks except for 75 mile beach (see above photo) which is classed a highway (our guide got done for speeding last week). We visited 2 fresh water lakes in which we swam - Jo loved it as there were no nasty creatures lurking beneath the surface, the shipwreck of a passenger ship which got stranded during a typhoon and loads of lookouts to admire the views. It was a shame we couldn't swim in the sea but the risk of being eaten by a great white put us off. Highlight of the trip was our 7 seater plane ride over the island. It was and added extra but for 25 quid each for 25mins flying over the island it was an opportunity not to be missed. The bus only broke down twice (broken air hoses) but at least we didn't get stuck. Next stop Noosa Heads as we need to get the sand out of our swimwear.
