(For some reason this stupid blog doesn't recongise Phi Phi, so we're in Ko Lanta!)
Wednesday 1st August
We woke up early…or in my case, I couldn't sleep, ready for our pick up to the pier. It wasn't too crowded and we boarded the boat and enjoyed the short trip to Phi Phi. It was a horrible trip, I wasn't feeling too good and the sea was really choppy. I could see the waves going over the port hole windows. I felt really green, but I managed not to be sick!
It was a beautiful day and the island looked great from the boat. We paid a small fee of 20 Baht to keep the island clean and headed to find our hostel, which was only a minute from the pier. It was a nice small room on the bottom floor! We went out and investigated the area. I decided to take us for a trek to long beach; we walked through the little town and into the jungle. We stopped off for some lunch, well for Stu, I still felt green from the boat! We carried on for a short while longer and we made it to the beach. It was definitely one of those picture perfect beaches you see on the postcards! We had a lay and swim in the sea, we both fell asleep for a while on the beach awaking at around 4pm to head back to the hostel as my appetite seemed to have returned!
We had a quick shower before heading across the street for some street food, which was really good! We went for a wander in the evening and found the backpacker area, lots of bars! We had a good look in the shops before returning back as we had booked a day trip for tomorrow.
Thursday 2nd August
We got ready for 11am and headed to the shore for or day trip to start, the water was still choppy as yesterday, hopefully I don't get sea sick today!
Our captain of our long tail boat was a crazy old man with one tooth! He didn't speak much English but with his one words and pointing we got the idea of what he was telling us!
We went to Bamboo Island, but not without getting completely drenched from the boat ride over here. The boat was no match to the waves today! One woman even put on a coat, why bother coming on a boat trip?!
The island was nice, a bit too busy with other tourists doing the same day trip as us. We had our lunch of friend rice and had a swim in the sea.
We got back in the boat where we were supposed to go to Mosquito Island, but it was too choppy, thank god! We stopped on route and did a bit of snorkelling; we spotted two dragon face pipe fish, which looked similar to a seahorse but longer! It was quite a find! Our captain was chopping some pineapple and throwing the skin in the sea, which caused the fish to swim around the boat to eat. He also threw it at my head a few times which made me scream as 50 thousand fish swam towards my face! Not pleasant!
We got back in the boat, which luckily had steps, no more bikini bottom incidents for me! We also lost the Japanese in the water, luckily I spotted them about 200 meters down the coast, and they had drifted with the current! We drove round and picked them up. We headed back round to the main island and went to monkey beach, which had a lot of monkeys here. I didn't get too close unlike some people, and then ran away when the monkey showed his disapproval! A few of the monkeys kept stealing the water bottles to drink from! It was quite funny; I saw one monkey washing a biscuit in the sea before eating it! Clearly didn't trust who gave it to him!
Our last stop was Maya Bay on Phi Phi Ley, but first we went for a tour in the lagoon next door, which had the bluest water I have ever seen. My pictures I took were actually the colour of the water! It was impressive. We then went to Maya Bay, first we had to swim and scramble over the rocks and through a small cave to reach the beach. It was a bit of a mission to say the least!
Maya Bay is where they filmed the movie The Beach. I watched the first 10 minutes before getting bored and not understanding the fascination of Leonardo di Caprio. The movie company completely remodelled the beach, destroying the ecosystem and the Thai government are still trying to sue the film company. According to people who have seen the movie, the beach looks nothing like it does in the film and are disappointed. However since neither of us have seen it we found the beach and view stunning! Win, win for us!
We had about 45 minutes to have a wander etc, we wrote in the sand 'we wish you were here' and took obligatory pictures to show home. We then wrote 'not' afterwards!
It was a great view of the bay, but very windy and the sand was blowing in my face which was not very nice getting it in your eyes!
We headed back for the boat and struggled walking across the rocks. One woman was trying to give me her phone to take back to her boat for her. Err no, unless you want me to break it for you? I kindly refused and basically told her she was an idiot for bringing it with her and went on my way.
We got back on the boat and waited for the rest of our passengers before going home. We headed back to Phi Phi Don (the main island) not without getting soaking wet once again from the waves! Each time our crazy captain kept point to the side of the boat, we all looked, got a face full of sea water and then he would laugh. Bit of a LAD he was!
We arrived back home, got washed and dressed before heading out to find some food. We found a cheap place and had a feast! Before doing some final shopping, swim shorts for Stu and some picture perfect postcards and magnet for mum!
