Saturday 23rd June
We woke up and got into our minivan pick up; we were advised not to eat anything if you suffer from motion sickness. Luckily I only suffer motion sickness when aboard a boat in choppy weather! I didn't manage to get the back seat to myself and had to share with Stu. It felt like I was in a sardine tin with a bunch of suitcases!
They weren't lying about the road, it was hard to sit still or sleep. One moment you're being flung to the left, then the right and back to the left. It wasn't as bad as the overnight bus in Laos, which I was eternally grateful for, I think that bus ride has aged me by 10 years! After three hours of uncomfortable ride we arrived in Pai. On first impressions, it was a very backpacker style town.
Our friend Nick and Raae were staying at one of the guest houses and we went out to search for it. A short walk away we found the guest house, it instantly reminded us of Koh Rong (minus the sand!). It was beautiful. Nick had brought a bar and was staying in Thailand for the time being. This was our main reason for visiting, to see Nick and Raae.
We checked into our little bungalow, with a hammock included! It felt good to sit in the hammock not having to do much!
Sunday 24th - Monday 25th June
For the next few days, we spent chilling at the guest house with Nick and Raae. It felt good after the last few energising weeks we have had recently!
We considered renting an automatic moto (scooter) for the day to visit the hot springs, but after watching Stu attempt to use Nick semi-automatic around the guest house, my (very little) confidence had fleeted and we both chickened out! Its properly a good thing seeing as there are so many road accidents here and you'll see many backpackers with bandages over their knees/feet/elbows; all moto accidents. We decided that chickening out would be a good idea right now! I did get a video of Stu going round in circles practising, his first attempt he went off too fast (by mistake!) and had to bail before crashing into a tree! Whoops!
Stu stayed out till 4am -7am most nights, one night he came home saying he got chatted up by two really gay Thai guys and a girl. When in Thailand…!
I found Pai a bit too hippy for my liking, there is a lot of yoga retreats and all that here. Not my kind of scene. Nick and Raae tried to convince us to stay, I would have done, but we had to leave tomorrow to get our bus and train to Bangkok!
Not really much to tell, but then again we didn't do a lot here! Looking forward to going to Bangkok though, a bit more built up than shacks we have gotten used to for the past three weeks!
